“Fashion Shoot in Fez, Morocco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2012

We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Fez, Morocco where we stayed at the wonderful Riad Numero 9 owned by Stephen and Bruno. After being picked up by one of Stephen's team at the airport, we were taken straight to the Riad. When we arrived, we were completely blown away by Stephen and Bruno's exquisite taste and attention to detail of their incredible Riad. We were fascinated with the contrast between the traditional Riad where we slept and the restaurant joint on (Restaurant 7) run by the adorable Bruno. He provided the most exquisite meals - healthy, traditional and delicious! Each meal was full of delicious flavours, everything was locally sourced. We had wonderful salads made with an incredible mix of flavours and preserved lemons. Breakfast was served with freshly squeezed juices and home made conserves on freshly cooked pancakes. Slightly less healthy was his his incredible desserts, including home made lemon meringue tart, fresh fruit salad dressed with rose water and rhubarb tart where the rhubarb had arrived from no further than Paris (Rhubarb is not available locally)!!! We were staying at Riad 9 for 3 nights and they could not have been more accommodating. From providing delicious meals, advising us with our photo shoot and connecting us with the most amazing experiences! Stephen was so accomodating that he even arranged a white horse for our photo shoot and also suggested and allowed us to photograph the horse inside the Riad!!! We could not recommend Riad 9 or Restaurant 7 enough, apart from the sheer luxury, incredible design and unbelievable food, above all was Stephen and Bruno's ability as hosts - they were generous with their time, so friendly and Stephen, Bruno and their staff made us feel as comfortable as if we were in our own home and we could not have done it without them!!!

Room Tip: All rooms have been restored to the highest degree and could not be more comfortable and interesting...

Lovingly resorted by owner Stephen Direnza and his partner Bruno, Riad 9 is a magical place. With only three rooms around a courtyard, it is easy to feel as if you have a house in Fes, but with a wonderful staff, including a cook who can prepare excellent dinners in the courtyard. Perhaps not for everyone because of narrow steep stairs and some other "inconveniences" it is one of the most charming and magical places I have been. Outstanding staff, charismatic owner -- a very special place indeed with a view over the entire Medina from the rooftop where your breakfast will be served. Although I was traveling with a friend, the riad would be ideal for two or three couples looking for a romantic setting.

Room Tip: The best room is the one on the top floor. It is spectacular.

This was a great place to stay in the centre of Fes. Very calm, great food, and very helpful and friendly staff. This riad went that little bit further to make our stay pleasant, complementary drinks etc and free pick-up, which makes you feel as though you are more than just a guest. Hiighly recommended. Not a single flaw.

One piece of advice for traveling in Morocco: Stay at Riad Numero 9!

The building itself is breathtaking and the staff is absolutely lovely. The owners, Stephen and Bruno, have mastered the art of hospitality. Stephen, who was beyond accommodating while organizing our travel arrangements, was also great about recommending plenty of authentic restaurants, sights, and day-trips. Bruno cooked us elegant dinners at the Riad which perfectly combined Moroccan cuisine with classic French technique.

Their attentiveness made the stay both luxurious and delightfully understated. A palatial haven in the center of the bustling Fez medina, Riad Numero 9 is the ideal means of fully experiencing Moroccan culture while simultaneously enjoying an incredibly relaxing vacation. An absolute must!

Six of us had been planning a week-long trip to Fez for five months and were 10 days from leaving the U.S. for Morocco when our travel agent disappeared with our money. We knew she had made reservations at Riad Numero 9, so we called the owner, Stephen, and asked for help in rescuing our adventure. He literally planned our entire itinerary (the travel agent had done nothing) and arranged cars, drivers, tours of the city and of historical sites outside the Medina.

His attention to detail involving rescuing our trip was just as noticeable the minute we opened the door to the riad. The breathtaking main room, with its three story atrium, was awash with light and magnificently decorated with a combination of Asian and Moroccan touches. Our rooms were similarly designed, each of the three harmonious but unique. We found stacks of plush towels and other toiletries in the bathrooms, which were Moroccan inspired but totally modern. The roof terrace not only provides an extraordinary view of the city but also a very comfortable place for gathering before or after dinner.

Speaking of dinner, go no further than the riad, or Stephen and Bruno's new restaurant soon to be opened next door. The riad's kitchen's modern Moroccan meals (breakfast and dinner) were so delicious we ate six out of seven dinners "at home."

We really did feel like we were guests in a friend or family member's home during our visit to Riad. Numero 9. Stephen, Bruno, Atika and her sisters embraced us with their warmth and attention to our needs. We are looking forward to seeing them all again on our next visit to Fez.

When I travel (and I travel a lot - have been to 53 countries), I look for the following in a hotel:
great design, cleanliness, good food, and great service. All of the above are found at Riad Numero 9. My interactions with Stephen (the owner) prior to my trip were great. He gave me great advice on planning my trip and everything was so well organized when I arrived. The hotel is beautiful and combines both Moroccan, French, and Asian influences. I felt very inspired by the decor.

Stephen has an incredible staff, including Atika, who took care of my every need. Breakfasts were lavish with three different types of pancakes, homemade jams, fresh orange juice, and coffee. They were served on the roof overlooking Fez. Dinners (I highly recommend that you eat dinner at the Riad at least once) were incredible. The Riad served what I would call modern Moroccan which had all the flavors but healthier. Soup, Moroccan salads, a main course of meat or vegetables or both, and a tart for desert. If you have a special request they are more than happy to cater to you. For my train ride to Marrakech, Atika packed me a lunch with a wonderful chicken sandwich....sure beats the food on the trains.

As for the service, its great. The rooms were very clean and nice and full of fresh towels, water, snacks, and little touches. At night, when its cold, there was a hot water bottle placed in my bed to keep it warm.

As for advice on Fez, Stephen and Atika make themselves available for advice, day trip travel arrangements, and anything else you might need.

I would definitely stay at Riad Numero 9 again in a heartbeat!

Look no further ! This is an exquisite place on all levels, from its ideal location in the midst of the medina, to the spectacular views overlooking the city from the cozy rooftop terrace, the home-cooked food, the immaculate taste of the decor, and the gracious hospitality of Stephen and Bruno and everyone working there that will make you feel right at home.

We missed it the moment we left, and can't wait for a reason to return to check out Bruno's new restaurant in the making...

Riad Nr. 9 is a true oasis away from home. More than worth it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Riad n°9 is an 18th century bourgeois residence that has been reincarnated as a boutigue bed and breakfast. The decisive factor in purchasing the property was the roof terrace which has sweeping views over the medina. Riad n°9 was originally purchased as a vacation home in 1999 and underwent a 3-year restoration process. We uncovered all the original 18th century mosaics, carved wood and plaster and hand-painted wood. In 2007, we opened to the public and changed nothing believing guests would appreciate the "personal" touches throughout. Our philosophy is to offer guests the possibility of appropriating the space for themselves and experiencing what an authentic medina home feels like. ... more   less
