If you ever visit fez then be sure not to miss the Tanneries especially the ones are located near the Karouine mosque. they are really impressing. You can climb to any of terraces belonging to the surroundings shops that look down on tanners'yard to see the young men working and take pictures. You should take a little branch of mint with you to avoid the stinky smell.

worldwide known fine leather processed in completely traditional way. The awfull organic smell (we've beeb told it's combination of pigeon poo and cow urine) was imposible to neutralize with a twig of mint plant. Suddenly I realized how happy I am with my job...

Our official guide brought us here and we climbed many narrow staircases until we got to the terrace, wow what a sight, seeing the men standing in the different vats of dye, the skins being washed and dried. The process was explained to us and I must admit that I now have a greater appreciation and valuing of leather products. It was a mild day and the smell wasn't too bad. We didn't buy any products and this was not an issue.

From the very top lookout, you can see all of Fez. It is a great place to get amazing photos of the city. It is fun to watch he process for a while and see all of the little things going on that you might miss if you don't hang out for a while. Visually, really interesting. We also found learning about how leather used to be tanned was really interesting and love that they have made a market for a traditional process to keep it going. The smell is minimal in the winter (we were there in late Dec.). You smell it more walking around the Medina near the Tanneries than what we did from above.

This is the best place to shop for leather goods since you know where the leather is coming from and that it is actually made from the local leather, tanned using the ancient process. The prices are really reasonable. If you don't want to buy anything, you just look and leave. They don't pressure you as much as in the souqs around the medina.

It's true that tanneries are smelly and possibly toxic. But, if you're going to buy Moroccan leather goods while shopping in Fes, this is a fantastic place to do it. We bought a number of items, all of which were shipped successfully back to the states by these kind, helpful people, along with a few extra things, given on the house. The owner and his daughter are a dynamic duo of helpfulness and hospitality.
