Owner description: The city’s ancient quarter is an intricate maze of streets lined with open markets, shops and mosques.

Great and confusing place. Lots to take in! The best kind of chaos! Would love to back and spend more time there when it is not Ramadan.

The medina of Fes is a must-see. Essential to arrange a properly qualified guide who will explain the complex history and significance of this city: a centre of religion, learning, trade, and ethnic cultures.
Do NOT go into the medina without guidance; a terrible task to navigate the way out awaits and you will not see all that should be seen. DO go there to learn.
No-one forgets the smell of the tannery! By contrast, the medina has the best local bread I have met in Morocco. Buy it near the bakery - otherwise it has been handled (baking of prepared bread is centralised against risk of fire).
A medina tour and the surrounding location requires a lot of energy! Go prepared and stick together.
I cannot understate the significance of this World Heritage location.

Fez medina is a buzzing place, full of colourful shops selling an enormous range of items. The ancient narrow lanes are still functioning roadways for donkey carts, some of which service the interesting, historically famous and somewhat smelly tannery (which is a must-see). Fortunately we had a local guide to show us all the special places inside, because navigating your way around on your own is no mean feat, and you could easily get lost in there. Some of the people touting for business are pushy and annoying, but don't let that put you off going. The spice shops are a very special treat.

Make sure you get a guide to show you around the Medina. A must see is the tannery. The products for sale are very reasonably priced but make sure you bargain.

We found this the most interesting Medina in Morocco of the six we visited. There was a lot of variety and surprises around every corner. Watch out for the donkey carts! Better shops with more variety than other Medina's. If you are not fit the sloped streets can be a problem when returning although you can take a taxi at either end and be driven around the Medina to the other entry.
