“A must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

This place is really remarkable and it's more interesting when you have a very knowledgeable local guide to tell you about the history, the people and their way of life. I really like seeing the Old Fez. While the souk is a lot smaller compared to Marrakech, in Fez you don't have to worry about motor bikes zooming left or right of you from out of nowhere. The medina is almost like Venice but without the water. I highly visiting this place.

“A mesmerising array of smells, sights and colours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013

Actually, if you keep your wits about you, you do not need a guide and it is easy to find your way back as the routes are all well sign-posted. Take your time to soak up the atmosphere as you are surrounded by centuries old buildings. Browse the many souks, bazaars and workshops - you don't have to buy! Most famous buildings are virtually tourist-free, many preferring to stay in the streets, unaware of the monuments behind many of the facades.

To an avid shopper, the medina can be too much temptation. We luckily discovered the artisan training college in Fez which trains students in the crafts of leather-making, ceramics and woodwork. The shop (open til 6 daily) sells students' work. It is of very high quality, takes cards, has a wide range of leather goods, enabling you to browse unhurriedly, and buy real hand-made goods made by apprentices, knowing you are supporting the development of skills for the next generation.

Visited as part of a group tour. Had a great local guide (wouldn't visit without one). A truly unique experience.

“Hustling and bustling in edina”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

The medina in Fes is truly fascinating. It is definitely more quiet and sophisticated than the medina in Marakech. The history of Fes is fascinating and one should definitely get lost in the Medina to enjoy what it has on offer.

“Very filthy. Animal manure all around and smelly.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Have to have a native guide to show you around the Fez Medina as its like a laberynth and maze. Though nice to know the shows around like carpets shops in the area where you will be amazed by their make and design, the overtly friendly host shall fleece you by quoting exhorbitant prices. Unless, you are prepared to buy and have a price in mind, do not budge. Be wary that upon purchase, they will force you to pay much for the carpet's packing for exhorbitant amount as my friend unfortunately experienced. Other attractions would be a leather tannery where you would be given fresh mint to smell to mask the awful smell of the leather tannery. If possible skip your visit to the medina at all.
