The medina of Fes should be on a must see list of travellers who like to preserved old town, one would feel you have gone back in time where life was not very complicated. we were there for 3 days and because of the scale of it we hired a guide on the first day and I think it was a good decision, the friendly guide showed us all the streets, mosques and madrassa(school) where children were still learning, he told us that lot of emphassis is given to girls education in fes and they are meant to the most clever in the country, the first girls university in islamic world was also started in fes hundreds of years ago. The second day we just decided to walk the streets on our own and get lost and we actually did, in fact we got lost even on the third day but that was the fun part of it, we were able to see so many things which we may not have seen without getting lost. we also enjoyed mint tea and a visit to a leather tannery where they still use pigeon poo to soften the leather instead of chemical. leather from fes is popular through the world. And enjoy the mint team when you are there, I got addicted to it and even make it in UK now months after my return

“forget a map and use your nose”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

My husband would say I'm directionally impaired, but I had no troubles at all gettiing around the medina. After one day of wandering the streets, a person with a good sense of smell can locate their position. For the first time in all of our travels, we threw out the map and relied on our noses. Please note: not all the smells are good. For instance, those with weak stomachs should not go wandering near the tannery/leather area without a scarf to keep the fume levels down. Each market has its own signature scent, and certainly each neighborhood restaurant. Good luck and enjoy the medina!

“Amazing place”

All life is here. A must, if visiting Fez. Take a guide, because you could be lost in here for weeks! If you are seriously overweight, avoid some of the alleys, you could get stuck!,
