Owner description: The city’s ancient quarter is an intricate maze of streets lined with open markets, shops and mosques.

The smell of slices, the site of donkey's bringing area to market, the colors and the sounds...you are in the heart of a Moroccan experience. While busy and lively it was lovely not to be dodging bicycles and motorbikes as you do in the Marrakech medina.

Loved every minute of this historic and charming city. Also be sure to see Meknes, a short train ride away and the ruins in Vollubilus. Awesome.

We were particularly interested in the tannery. Also the various areas with their specific crafts. Easy to get lost without a guide.

The medina is very attractive. Small lanes, mosques, traders in the souks, bring you back to centries ago.

I have read about the Fez Medina too many times but it still amazed me when I came to visit. I would highly recommend that you get a guide because to say that the medina is chaotic and confusing is an understatement. I could imagine that not much has changed in over 1100 years, with the exception of some of the wares being sold, like bottled water. The place is like an assault on the senses, an experience that cannot be captured adequately by camera or video. If you wander without a guide, you can always ask or pay someone to lead you back to familiar territory but a professional guide will be able to lead you through the labyrinth and point out details that may otherwise be missed (like one alley that looked barely 18" wide but was the main way to get to two residences. The Fez tanneries is a must-see even if the smell could be intolerable for some.
