Me and y father stepped in the Medina after arriving in Fes, after travellig in morroco for 10 days and visiting 9 cities. Given the amount of experience we already had dealing with moroccans and after several people warning us about how nasty the medina of fes can be, we knew what to expect. And they were right indeed. The people here are overly harrasing, they follow you and are overly pushy, even by medina moroccan standards. There is nothing special to see except to contemplate the huge size of this old town. Other than that, its not clean, and the people can have pretty disgusting behaviours. I shopped a bit with a good amount of success only because i was ready due to previous experiences.

For those coming to fes as a first moroccan experience, NEVER accept the merchant's initial prices. I was offered 250 dihram for a pair of earrings for my girlfriend, and bought 4 pairs for 150 dihram. Just lead the conversations in a polite but firm way. As for the legions of scum that will harrass you, just ignore them. Behave as if they are not there. If you think is not worth the effort, you are not loosing much.

The hard sell is gone here. At least for us. Also the goods seem less "manufactured" and more "crafted."

The street food is stellar. Had a single bite of lamb that was better than ALL the food in Marrakesh combined. I wish we had planned to spend more time in Fez. Next trip will start here.

Out of the medinas so far, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fez, and Marrakesh, I liked this one the best and will probably return if I revisit Morocco. It has the best architecture, history, and hospitality from my experience. I found the people warm and truly hospitable. It was relatively clean, pedestrian only, and met some merchants who were honest and fair, not just rip off artists like other places.
