“A decadent giant”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

Placed on the very best spot of Fez, overlooking the medina the Sofitel Palais Jamai Fes should be the most spetacular hotel of the country. But wen I was there I found a very different situation. Our bad experience started when we first arrive at the room and found the bathroom used by somebody else and not flushed away!!!!! It lacks excellence in service and repairs. During the three nights we were there the air conditioning of the rooms did not work and every day the staff told me it would be fixed that day, however after 3 days nothing was done and the employee revealed that it had been more than 2 weeks without running the air conditioner and would not be fixed it during our stay. Adding to that there were heavy sheets in the beds that forced us to sleep with the window open, which is a bad experience specially when the mosques start the praying callings at 5am.
The restaurant is extremely expensive and does not serve dishes up to its price. Anyway, it is a 3 star hotel level is going through a 5 stars.

We spent 4 nights at Palais Jamai and it was a great time. Service is excellent, but what we enjoyed most was sunbathing around and swimming in the great swimming pool overlooking the medina, end of December. Having breakfast outside on the terrace in the sun is an excellent memory, too. The water was at 26 °C, swimming pool furniture is great. We had one very nice dinner at the Al Fassia restaurant, too
If we had to criticize something, we would say:
The bathroom had nothing great. Plumbing and water temperature control just average.
And all is great but relatively expensive.
But all in all, a great hotel, a great time. We would definitely recommend the place.

Fantastic garden and swimmingpool
Very friendly staff
Very good morocan restaurant , the international restaurant looks dull.
Rooms are ok but need refreshment. Some paint would do wonders

Oozing with it. If you prefer the large hotels over the smaller, more intimate guesthouses/riads in Morocco, I cannot imagine a better option in Fes. I stayed here for one night in October of 2012. I arrived around 7pm without a reservation. Upon entry, I was greeted in the lobby and escorted to a plush leather club chair and offered a rose-scented hot towel before going through room options. Every inch of the property is exquisitely outfitted with trappings of luxury and history (you should take the elevators just for the photographic opportunities). But like the other renovated historic properties in the Sofitel brand, the rooms are modernized *just enough* to be well-appointed, but maintain the overall atmosphere of history. While other reviewers seem to fault the service, I had no problems. About an hour after I checked in, an unannounced tray of fresh cut plums, cookies and still and sparkling water arrived. My requested room service arrived without incident. My one critique is that the menu was extremely pricey (even for Sofitels) for the quality of food that was delivered, something I'm just starting to accept from luxury properties in general. But the outstanding Sofitel bed and bedding never disappoints, as it did not at the Fes property. I usually choose to shy away from large chain properties, luxury or otherwise, but I continue to be impressed by the quality, luxury and individuality of the Sofitel brand.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the pool/medina and watch the hillside sparkle at night. Note: of the fou...

After a long, and less than wonderful limo ride from Tanger, we were in need of WOW factor. Palais Jamai DELIVERED. Service from all staff what top notch.

Located right on the outer wall of the medina, at the top of the hill, Sofitel's jewel of Fez sits in a command position above old town with spectacular views. Splurge for a medina view room and you won't be disappointed.

A converted palace with much if the original gardens and grounds, this hotel has western comforts, comfortable bedding (not what you might see in most euro hotels thank goodness). Spectacular Spa and Hamam too :-)

Just outside the grounds lies the old town Medina. You are TWO turns, down narrow ally ways, from being completely lost, so take advantage of the guides that the hotel has to offer. They can arrange everything from a walking tour, shopping tour, or car service anywhere.

If this is your first time in Morocco, ALL guides will take you to the most expensive shops (the get a cut of what you buy). If you just want to see the sights, make this very clear from the start. Even if you make this clear, most guides will take you to sights that have access only thru store fronts.

The Moorish are this planet's MASTERS of sales, so triple up on your self control, and don't be afraid to say NO! Carpet salesmen are particularly masterful!

We've stayed at the top end Riads in this region, they are a great experience, but if you feel like you need a more FULL SERVICE experience and air conditioning you can count on, Palais Jamai is the finest hotel in North Africa in my opinion. To be clear, this is not a bargain hotel, but for this level of excellence in the USA, you'd pay over a grand a night!

Room Tip: Splurge on a medina view room. Suites are simply lovely if you can afford it.

If you are not staying in a Riad, the Palais Jamai is the place to stay. Lovely hotel with gorgeous views, nice rooms, and a great swimming pool. Service is good. Food is very mediocre. We had dinner in the bar. The hamburger was over done and the french fries were soggy. I had to ask several times for condiments. Breakfast was ok, but the omelet was a bit dry. Even with the issues, it still is a very nice place to stay while in Fez.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the swimming pool and medina - great views
