“Like Staying in a Museum”

I think it is incredible that we got to stay in a dar built in 1498. This is one of the most unique accommodations I've had. Instead of renting one room, we had the entire place for ourselves, which felt like a complete luxury.

The tile work inside is amazing, but the material lends itself to cooling the space, which makes it great for summer...lol, not so much for cooler weather. We had two electric furnaces in our bedroom that kept it comfortable. Downstairs, there is a propane heater that we used in the sitting area. It was OK. I've heard of other places charging for the propane, here it was free.

There are two showers. The downstairs one seemed to warm Up more quickly. No shower curtains, so you must direct the water carefully.

We did not use the kitchen, but it was supplied with oil, pots, pans, etc. WiFi was strong enough to stream videos most of the time, which I hear is great for Morocco.

The location is exceptional as mentioned in other reviews. It's right off one of the main streets, rue talaa, and near the main gate. Yet it is peaceful inside the dar. If you wish to eat a camel burger at the famous clock cafe, it is nearby. The dar itself is unsigned, so follow signs for dar kartav, which is immediately across from it.

Staying at Dar Mystere was a unique experience, which I would strongly recommend to anyone who wants to step out from the typical.

“Lovely Dar fantastic location.”

Dar Mystere is a very attractive property really well located inside the medina, close to many eating opportunities and the Blue Gate for easy taxi access. It was lovely to have your own totally private space after a day in the bustling medina. As with all traditional properties there are many steps (but I guess it would be easy to sleep on the ground floor if this was an issue.) Really useful to have 3 toilets (4 if you count the one on the roof terrace). Alami nice and helpful. No criticisms - just be aware the lighting could be a bit brighter if you want to read in the evening. Brilliant Wifi connection. This Dar has a lovely feel to it.

“Clean, good location and very spacious”
Reviewed April 19, 2016 for a stay in April 2016

We stayed in Dar Mystere for 4 nights. This Riad is situated in the centre of the Medina in a side street. So no hard noise from the Medina itself. There are 3 bedrooms with 7 beds in total. The roof terrace is lovely with a nice view.
The owner is very helpful and can arrange some day trips also. We went for a day trip to Ifrane, Azrou en the Cedar Forest for the monkeys.

We all enjoyed our stay in this big Riad! It's a nice laid-back place in the centre of the Medina.

“Cold place with bad heating”
Reviewed January 3, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

The place is lovely home located in the Medina. It totally gives a good vibe to the local life in Fez. The person in charge of the place - Alaami was always available on the phone and he was there to pick us up from the main road to help us navigate to this place at 12 am. He helped us get settle down and helped us with luggage etc.

Downside of this property:
- The heating was very bad. It got very very cold in the night
- The water never got hotter than luke warm. So, it was struggle for kids to shower
- You have to lug your luggage all the way to the property manually, since no car can get close to this property. Please be aware of this fact before taking heavy suitcases.

if you have kids, this place can be little too rough on the edges.

“Great base in a great city”
Reviewed April 10, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Sat in the heart of the Medina, the house was a fantastic base to explore the city. It has been beautifully restored and well equipped with all you need to have a great holiday. The house also has a wonderful roof terrace to enjoy the scenic views.

The owner was helpful and supplied a good level of local knowledge.

If you want to stay in Fez I would recommend this house.

“Beautiful characterful spacious house in amazing location at a great price”
Reviewed November 29, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

So sorry about the long delay in getting back to you. We had a completely fantastic time at Dar Mystere. The house was completely and utterly gorgeous, even more fantastic than it looked online and in a brilliant position. In the best location yet also lovely and peaceful, with friendly neighbours, There was loads of room for all 6 of us and we were all very comfortable. If I had to point out any improvements they would be to refix the tiles on the stairs as it was a little crumbly and uncomfortable under bare feet, and to have some brighter lighting for reading and playing games at the table, as it was only really in the snug that we could see well enough. This is by no means a criticism. I would go back and stay at your beautiful home in Fez tomorrow if I was going back. It was also brilliant being by the food market to buy great breakfast goodies. Fresh coffee, flat bread, with eggs or honey from the honey souk with mint tea for the children was a favourite.

Alami was really helpful and we enjoyed meeting him and formulating plans.

Many Thanks and best wishes.

Alex

“Independent Living at it's best !”
Reviewed September 3, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Dar Mystere was more than I could have hoped for. The home is beautiful what you see in the pictures is what get. Alami, the housekeeper was excellent and patient. If you love to cook, the kitchen facilities are adequate enough to do that - there is a fridge and enough utensils to prepare anything you wish. Shopping for food was just a few steps on the main path less than 5 minute walk - many vendors to choose from and a butcher. You must have Mint Tea with Fresh Mint !!

The two-level roof top of Dar Mystere has a magical view especially in the evenings. House is a 3 story facade with winding stairs to the roof and the bedrooms in between. After walking the Medina daily the stairs become a non issue. There are several mosques in the area so you will hear the calls to prayer six times a day- at some points you hear 5 different calls at the same time - very melodious and rich! It is a sound that motivates you to stop and listen. Another very cool thing about Dar Mystere was the sliding roof which allowed heat to escape and gave a very court-yard feel to the main floor. It did rain a couple of times but the roof cover was very easy to slide closed to keep the rain out of the house.

Dar Mystere is located in the old Medina so the paths are narrow and winding I learned there are two hills to the souks and shops; the High Hill and the Low Hill... both lead deep into the Medina and if you keep walking you will end up back where you started. The return trip is steep - at some points extremely steep - so no cute shoes !!! Sneakers or hiking shoes are strongly recommended especially if you are a shopper - for it is a bit like carrying shopping bags on a stair-master - walking the old Medina is not for the faint of heart or non walkers; of course I spent more than I intended, and had to buy another suitcase !

Unless you are an extreme heat lover - I would recommend not going to Fez in August. The daily temperature was between 95 - 100 F daily. The evenings/and nights were cooler just below 70 F. The house stayed relatively cool on the main floor and the fans in the rooms were sufficient for the evenings. Most Moroccans stay on the lower level of their homes during the day anyway.

The special treat was the Wifi connection which worked perfectly ! There is not a TV - but who needs one ? Go get lost in Fes the best reality show you can not only watch, but also have the lived experience.

This was not my first trip to Morocco, but my first to Fes. For me, Dar Mystere was the place to stay.
