Very friendly, nice suite, nice ambience. Downsides: overly pushy in trying to persuade us to dine in the riad. We were also surprised to be handed an envelope by the manager on our departure indicating that a contribution towards the staff was expected. Water was cold until we asked to have it turned on. Room was cold and heating was turned off.

The Ryad Alya is exquisite in every way. The owner left much of the beautiful hand done moroccan art of the historical Moroccan building. At the same time he did a brilliant job of updating it with towel warmers and all the comforts of a luxurious palace, (including heat which is not always the case in other ryads). The rooms and courtyard are gorgeous.

The eyes are constantly fed by the beauty of the art that is everywhere, from the hard carved doors and walls, the extremely high ceilings with original paintings and mosaics, hand crafted chairs and upholstery, all done with extraordinary taste, genuinely Moroccan but with a hip feel.

The tastebuds are fed but the sumptuous dinners and delightful, plentiful breakfasts served in a gorgeous courtyard or breathtaking dining room. In warmer weather one can also eat on the roof top terrace with lovely view. The service was impeccable.

The owner and staff are warm, friendly, extremely professional and attentive. They were willing to help with all requests and needs, from organizing a brilliant tour guide (with a Ph'd in Moroccan history), to taking guests to find works of art such as hand carved marble columns or exquisitely crafted lamps.

The owner grew up in the medina and knows where the finest products and works of art can be found. His knowledge of Moroccan culture and art is a great help when looking for the heart of Morocco, which is such an incredible country.

The location is brilliant as well. I recommend this Fes Ryad very highly.

At Riad Alya we spent the best time in Morocco. We stayed in riads before, but had never enjoyed it so much.
The place is a splendid mini-palace which is peaceful and very central, just a few minutes by walk from the Fes Medina.
It was renovated a couple of years ago by the owner/manager who used local artisans and architects.
Upon arrival, he gave us a tour of the Riad, and shared his experience and passion for the project.
The food was superb ; each time we were spoiled with various dishes of traditional Moroccan cuisine.
Examples include home-made tomato / carrot / peach jams for breakfast, Moroccan pies, soups, world class chicken-lemon tajines, pastillas etc. for diner.
That made us realise that we had long ago forgotten how real food tastes like!
The service was so good and efficient. Fatah who served the food at the restaurant was not only efficient and quick but also a joyful and entertaining character.
All the staff was very deferential, reserved, but warm and very friendly.
We were impressed by the quality of the musical soirées with traditional bands that the owner organised each evening, and in particular the unique New Years Eve (we had 6 musical bands).
The owner was also a real support when we had a misunderstanding with a merchant from the souk and (successfully) helped us get our money back.
I also really appreciated the good WI-FI connection, impeccable hygiene, constant and adjustable temperature in our bedroom (unusual for a riad!), the advice to help organise our visit of Fes and surroundings.
All in all, this riad was a 6 star Moroccan experience.

Room Tip: I'd recommend to pick up a bedroom/suite with a view over Fes.

we stayed here as a family in a suite where the two bedrooms opened into a common salon which opened into the ryad courtyard. (fes suite). the look and feeling of this ryad is comfortable, high style moroccan-hip, and the staff feel more like an adopted family than staff. they are friendly, watchful and welcoming. breakfast (included) and dinner (additional) were excellent. this ryad is in the medina and though cars cannot enter, the staff help collect bags and direct you to an underground parking lot (quite safe) nearby. delightful and sincere people.

I got to Ryad Alya by chance as I learnt about it by a travel mate I met on my way to Fès. The riad is for sure one of the best I visited during my journey in Morocco and I couldn't get a better suggestion. I do recommend spending some time here, in the Medina of Fès though easily findable. At my arrival, the guys at the reception were more than kind and attentive and I felt immediately pampered. The riad is in a marvellous historical building, it looks like a castle or a fine mansion, with wood engravings and precious stuccos. The rooms are quite comfortable, very clean and original. Last but not least, the breakfast served by Fatah includes typical bread and loaves and delicious jams that are absolutely unforgettable! I haven’t tried other riad in Fès, but this is highly recommendable: the taxi driver will take you to very close to the riad, then you’ll reach it on foot after a short distance. The place is pretty much quiet, both in the rooms and in the inner patio, where you’ll be offered a freshly brewed mint tea and cookies. The riad has got a hammam, too, but I haven’t tried it.

We chose Alya as a splurge hotel for 2 nights during our 3 week stay in Morocco, since very nice, but more basic hotels can be found for a fraction of the price of Alya. This is the perfect hotel to experience traditional Moroccan luxury. The majority of high end riads and hotels in Fes are more modern and westernized aesthetically, but Riad Alya feels like a traditional Moroccan palace. The riad is beautiful, and our room (the Fes suite) was spectacular, as well as quiet and comfortable.
The staff was very helpful and accommodating, and breakfast was the best we had in any hotel we stayed in during our trip (and we had great breakfasts almost everywhere we stayed). Our stay at Alya was really enjoyable, and we'd highly recommend it. It's also worth mentioning that we had no problems as a gay couple here or at any hotel we stayed in in Morocco, since that was a bit of a concern of ours before going on our trip.

Room Tip: The Fes suite was unbelievably beautiful, and perfectly quiet.

This is a superb guest house in Fes. This is not a conventional hotel as such. It is a riad, a traditional courtyard house (or mini-palace in this case) that has been adapted for guests. The interior is breathtakingly beautiful, with stunning traditional intricate tile work and plaster carvings. It's worth staying here just to admire the courtyard! The rooms are very comfortable and also quite beautiful. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace, which has a wonderful view over the medina of Fes. It's a good breakfast too, but we chose to try other local restaurants for other meals. The staff members are very helpful and efficient, and we heard them chatting to guests in at least four languages. Location is excellent, down a quiet alley in one of the best parts of the medina, and close to the main tourist sites. The medina is a warren of alley ways going off in different directions and if you don't have a guide for your first exploration you will be sure to get lost. A note of caution about Fes -- several people suggested it was not safe to walk about at night. This is the only town in Morocco where we got such advice.
