We had a very traumatic experience that I'd like to describe in detail and in no way do I place complete blame on Fes inspiration, our riad, or ourselves. I hope by reading my wife and I's story, future tourists can avoid any problems and learn from the series of events that led to this misunderstanding.
At 10am we were finishing breakfast on the rooftop when our riad host told us our tour guide had arrived. For some reason she did not let him in and he decided to get tea from elsewhere.
We went downstairs and did not see anyone so we went outside looking for him and no one was to be found. About 10:15, we are waiting inside the riad when our host tells us that this man is our guide.
We depart with this guide and have a horrible experience. He is unprofessional, unstable, and seems to be on drugs. The police arrest him but since we can not understand whats going on, he tells us he needs to only pay a fine for an expired tour guide license and will return to our riad to finish the tour.
As we are trying to go back to the riad, he finds us and tells us sorry and continues the tour even though we want to leave.
He takes us to an abandoned mosque and locks us there. We receive a call from Rachid that we have been kidnapped and this is not our guide. We are so scared because we are alone in this building with him locked inside.
I demand he let us go and as we go outside, his friends are waiting. We are lost but decide to run. We finally find our way to the riad where the actual Fes inspiration guide is waiting.
My wife is extremely traumatized by this because only 4 days prior, we were assaulted in Marrakesh and a blade held to my neck while my wife screamed for help and no one came to assist. I wish these types of experiences on no one.
We initially blamed our riad for sending us with the wrong guide but after hours of investigating, we realized, the fes inspiration guide, Idris, not rachid, may have mentioned my name on the phone and the false tour guide heard and came to the riad asking for me by name.
I also blame Fes Inspiration partially because they waited 2 hours while we were being scammed before they called to check on our safety. Idris should have returned from his tea break and called us immediately when he saw we had left with a fake tour guide.
I also blame myself for not checking the credentials more rigorously. I had a gut feeling that this guy was on drugs but it was too late to leave.
When we finally regained our composure, we went on the tour with Idris. He is a nice man but definitely not a good tour guide. We saw a few sites but mainly just waited for him while he talked to his friends in the street.
I'm sure like all the reviews say, Rachid is an excellent guide but please make sure to ask for him. I'm surprised he did not do our tour because we booked well in advance and others who gave negative reviews because he was not their guide, he responded because they booked last minute.
If you would like any further information or have any questions, please message me. Even though we had a few disturbing experiences in Morocco, we loved the country and met some of the most kind people.
