“Breathtaking Ambience …”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2009

L’Ambre is a part of Riad Fes – definitely one of the best renovated riads in Fes. We didn’t stay at the Riad but went there for a dinner.

Excellent ambience, very good service and good food [choice and order of adjectives is as it should be].

Menu and all other relevant details are available at their website.

They have a vast collection, browsing through the menu before going there, can be helpful. We tried the Gastronomic Menu with two variations. My grading (A= best … F=pathetic) and comments are as follows:

A variety of traditional Moroccan fresh, marinated and simmered starters: B in two cases, C in one.
Soup served with dry fruits: B-
Pastilla: B+
An assortment of briouates: B-

The main courses we tried were:

Kabab maghdour: diced beef in a sauce of aromatic herbs: C
Beef-cubes were dry and sauce was an anti-climax.

L'hame mhamer: spiced lamb tossed in a unique onion jam: A
Lamb was very good, whereas Kabab were not at all up to the mark.

Ice cream: A+
One of the best ice-creams I have tasted
Traditional pastries: B-
Nothing special

PS. Our first encounter with the management (at the Riad) was not at all welcoming. Perhaps he (a middle-aged, clean-shaved gentleman) took us for back-packers who have arrived at a wrong place. However, after the dinner his attitude was considerably better.

Advice: Don’t be over-judgmental due to superficial attributes of the guests.

“fabulous food, gorgeous hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2009

Fod at Riad Fes was delicious. There are two set price menus (about 420 and 500 dirham, not including beverages). We both had the "Family Menu". I had the Moroccan starters (absolutely delicious- plates of marinated eggplant, okra, and roasted red and green peppers, and a white bean dip). My fiance had the vegetable soup - ok, a bit bland. My lamb with saffron and coriander is excellent - served with toasted almonds and extraordinarily sweet and soft dried apricots. His roast lamb with onion jam was very tender. Fresh fruit (melon) was cool and refreshing; his ice cream with strawberry coulis was unexciting. Half bottle of Medallion was good, but not great. The riad is luxurious, and the bar area is trendy. The music and feel were what I would expect in Miami. A welcome change of pace from the more traditional Moroccan places we've experienced so far. Pretty expensive for Morocco: we spent 1200 dirham, including a 3 course meal, a half bottle of wine, and one cocktail each; about $75/person. Wouldn't do ti every night, but it was definitely worth it.

“Bad experience at Riad Fes”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2009

The Riad itself has been restored and decorated to a very high standard, and the courtyard bar is very chic. However - and leaving aside for the moment the unbelievable arrogance and unhelpfulness of the management - my wife and I subsequently suffered a horrible attack of food poisoning after eating dinner there.

So be warned!
