“Our home away from home in Fes...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2011

We stayed at Dar Attajalli for 4 or 5 nights in September of 2010, right at the end of Ramadan.
What a beautifully restored building !
Kleo and her amazing staff looked after us incredibly.
We were sick for about a day or 2, during which time Naim soothed our troubled stomachs with his Berber medicine.
Kleo assisted with organising a car to Marrakech and getting a carpet shop to open for us on the night of Eid (our last night in Fes).
The breakfasts on the rooftop terrace were awesome. My favourite was the soft boiled eggs with cumin and olive oil.
The terrace was a great place to relax in the evening after a day of getting lost in the Medina.
We were up there on the last night of Ramadan when all the surrounding mosques made their last call to prayer for Ramadan - what a haunting experience.

Proprietor Kleo Brun went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. We enjoyed her company and the dinner we had at the hotel with other guests was delightful. Additionally, the hotel is very pretty.

This was our first trip to Morocco and we were a little aprehensive about finding the riad so we followed the instructions on the website and called from the taxi to arrange for someone to meet us. This all went really smoothly and we were helped with our bags and welcomed with mint tea after a 5/10 min walk from the car to the riad -which is amazing, really tranquil, beautifully restored and very comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble for Kleo the owner or her staff. We had forgotten to visit the cash point after a long train journey and Kleo leant us cash for dinner - not something all hotels would be happy to do!!
Kleo arranged a guide for us the following morning which was ideal as we only had 2 days to explore so a 1/2 day with a guide was pefect to get our bearings. We also ate at the riad 1 evening - you need to give notice for this. The food was exceptional and eating on the terrace surrounded by flowers and listening to the call to prayer is a really magical memeory.
We highly recommend this riad its close to the souks and is a relaxing space to chill out after a day shopping- everyone was so welcoming and friendly - which really made it a great start to our holiday!

A perfect experience in this beautifully restaurated Dar in Fes. The building itself is a reason to come to Fes. Kleo, the German owner renovated it herself and makes sure you get everything you need to have a memorable stay: delicious breakfast, a very clean and beautifully furnished room, a shower which deserves the name, a map which actually shows you the way through the Medina, lots of interesting tips or recommendations to get around Fes and a peaceful relaxing ambiance and a typical homecooked dinner if you wish. If you are lucky, Kleo might even show you around a little and show you buildings or cafes you find in no guidebook. If you need to wash clothes she will arrance for it, if you want to make a special excursion she will find somebody to offer it to you and if you want to go to a restaurant she might send somebody with you to make sure you don't pay overprice there.
The Salon Marrocain offers quiet music to a "Thè a la Mynthe" or do you prefer the sunset over the Medina of Fes from the Terrasse? Both is perfect afer the noisy busy day in the Medina. And the matraces will guarantee a good sleep - we did not even hear the calls to prayer...

So many good things: beautiful renovation of a stunning old building, great central location in the medina, wonderfully hospitable staff, fantastic food thanks to the cheeky Naim ...
BUT: a furnace of a bedroom! We couldn't sleep throughout our three night stay: open windows gave no privacy but closed left us gasping, an open door compromised security overnight but closed left us dripping with sweat!
If Dar Attajjali wants to win the serious reputation it otherwise deserves it must install aircon or at least distribute some fans. Yes, it was a hot spell in the city ... but hell, it's Summer in Fes, what would you expect!!!
In summary, it's probably perfect in the Spring but I couldn't recommend it in the Summer.

Dear guests!

Yes, it was a particularly hot summer. And the coming summers might be hot again...

Even though the architecture of a traditional courtyard house assures a pleasant coolness in the downstairs area, we decided to install air conditioning in the upstairs rooms.

Ready for summer! We are looking forward to having you at Dar Attajalli.

If you want an instituion experience this is it. There are so many rules that you will become acquainted with once you start breaking them. Don't open the windows, don't request an extra pillow, don't talk on the roof terrace at night, don't use the plates in the kitchen. The riad has been beautifully restored but is not particularly comfortable and is extremely expensive for what it is. And then you get whacked with 3 lots of additional taxes and a credit card fee.

Apart from Kleo's friendly welcome, she sorted out our motorbike insurance, a garage for the bike, found a guide, recommended restaurants, and hosted a memorable evening meal on the roof terrace.
The breakfasts were the best we had in Morocco, and the staff were incredibly pleasant and friendly.
We had the mosaic room which was most comfortable and authentic.
This beautifully restored riad is set in the heart of the medina, and perfect for exploring.
