Moroccan House Hotel Casablanca
Ranked #40 of 77 Hotels in Casablanca
Reviewed April 29, 2013

This hotel tries to impersonate the great moroccan riads, but it fails in my opinion. In trying to be what it isn't, the Moroccan House Hotel lost its own identity. Over the top decorations gave us a major head ache. It all just looked tatty to us, sorry.
Having said that, we didn't come to Casablanca to stay in our room, and things like décor are to be liked or disliked depending on the person.
What's important is that this hotel is clean, spacious and the breakfast choice is amazing. We can't fault any of that. The quality of our sleep was good.
I just wished the reception staff was more polite and friendly. This was a total shock to not get a warm Moroccan welcome, but just a corporate: 'passports please'!

We stayed at the Moroccan House hotel our first night in Morocco. Our room was somewhat small for our two medium-sized suitcases. During the night all of the lights except the bathroom lights went out. We were too tired to do anything about it plus we had flashlights for our upcoming trip to the desert. The hotel appeared to be reasonably well located. The breakfast was good - we had eggs made to order.

Stayed here two nights at start of tour. Room clean but very tired and a lot needed repair. Staff was not helpful, sometimes downright rude. Had a problem first morning with shower (head came off plastic tube). Still not resolved when we left 24 hours later. Not a three star property and not worth the money. Only redeeming feature was that the head porter was very helpful- got taxi, told us what it should cost, made local cell phone call when staff wanted to charge 1 Euro/min). Do not recommend.

I'll start with the positives:

The wifi worked well enough for me to find another hotel within Casablanca and within a bare 45 minutes of having arrived, blessed be, we picked up our (still packed) suitcases and left this foul place.

The negatives (in no particular order):

Room filled with flies upon entry

'Balcony' looking out on stinking back alley and lots and lots of aircon units

'Concierge' happily demonstrating that the air con doesn't work

Dirty

Tiny bed pressed against a wall but covered with draped garments resembling those of an elephantine prostitute

No cot for our 16 month old- and there isn't one in the whole building

Marble armrest not attached to plinth

Some sort of leather clad bit of wood shoved into the space on the floor at the end of the bed but basically lying on the floor

Plumbing from all sides that makes a noise like a cat in a well

Tax up front before seeing room

Ramp to enable pram ingress ends in a wall, pretty much

Aforementioned 'Concierge' more like Rants Mohammats from Frank Zappa film

You don't want to touch anything instinctively

Room (#47) decorated like a Disney interpretation of an an Arabic Barbara Cartland's underwear drawer

Unsure if room door actually locked from inside

Staff lacking warmth

Staff lacking understanding of why I would want to leave this establishment in favour of, actually, ANY other

Safe not working- although I'm not 100% on that

Manager pointedly telling me that #47 is "a good room", however he did offer to put us in a larger room which may have sufficed were we not already walking out with our luggage under our arms at that point

The bathroom must have been tiled and sealed by a skilled taxi driver

Metal boiler slung attractively above bath

Toothpaste and soaps having the appearance of child's accessories

Half used toilet roll bearing indentations from last user's hand

Every single part of the hotel that we experienced feels cramped and subterranean

No actual room in room

OK, OK, this is an Arabic country but does that really warrant an overbearing call to prayer as lift muzak?

A4 copies of '4 out of 5' tripadvisor rating placed prominently. How can this be???

I 'phoned the Kenzi Tower and arranged a booking with them and, yes, it may have been excessively corporate and a touch more money than I would normally consider for a night but after spending a dispiriting three quarters of an hour in the less than salubrious surroundings of the Moroccan House Hotel, Casablanca, I really needed to redress the balance. I'm not really a complainer and will put up with stuff if overall everything else is working but I literally have not one single word of praise for the hotel, it's staff or (especially) its rating on this site.

Hideous.

100% AVOID.

Seeing this hotel tucked in amongst the Sheraton and other 4 star hotels in the Trip Advisor rankings we felt reasonably confident about booking it for a 3 night stay. What fools we were. Casablanca has a serious shortage of reasonable mid-range hotels and this one does nothing to address that problem.
On arrival, as well as the normal check-in process, we were asked to pay the city/room tax before we even saw the room.
The room was booked through an agency, so we figured we'd probably been given a cheap one because of that. Small, no storage space except for a narrow cupboard with one shelf (high up) and one clothes hanger, a double bed pushed up against one wall so that one party always had to climb over the other to get out during the night (given the not so young ages of many of the guests, including ourselves, this is extremely unsatisfactory, to say the least), a wall safe that fell off the wall as soon as we tried to use it, dirty rugs. (The wall safe had no batteries to operate it, it wasn't secured to anything and when we asked the desk staff to store our passports they initially said we would have to pay for that privilege). There was also a 1euro charge for a map of Casablanca. This map was scarcely legible and was 95% an advertisement for the hotel.
The service was appalling - 4 people standing around at breakfast. One cooks eggs, another replaces food from the buffet on request, and the other 2 take your room number when you enter the breakfast room. No-one wipes the tables down after each sitting - one has to ask for the table to be cleaned before sitting down, and then most of the crumbs end up on the seats. We had to ask for toilet paper every morning we were there and the desk staff were perfunctory and offhand when this request was made each morning.
Some positives: the windows of the rooms seal well, so most traffic noise is blocked out each night. Water pressure and temperature in the shower are good, but once again, the high step over into the shower makes it quite dangerous, especially as no non-slip mats are provided in the shower. The mattresses in the beds are comfortable, if far too small. There was also a small fridge.
All in all, if you're planning to stay in Casablanca for only one night, you might want to risk this hotel. Otherwise, avoid like the plague.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

Staff were fantastic in every respect.  Hotel itself is larger 10 floors - but you generally did not feel impact of this.  Public areas for reception and eating are beautifully decorated and laid out in Moroccan House style.  Rooms are quite small - no desk and only one chair but the public areas are fine for sitting.
Hotel is in busy part of town close to centre and has road noise and a festival nearby but this was not a problem at night as rooms are double glazed and noise level was acceptable.  could be a problem if you are a light sleeper.
We were robbed on street crossing road outside hotel by a motor bike rider who emerged from the traffic which was stopped at traffic lights and pushed into us grabbing the woman's necklace then speeding off.  This is common in Cassablanca and it would have been helpful from hotel if we had been warned.  Best not to wear jewelry that is on display.  Mobile phones are also a favorite target in Cassablanca (we witnessed exchanges of goods in markets)

My tour of Morocco started at this hotel. Was a enough hotel nothing to fancy but a good stay.
I really liked that they gave you the old chunky key as well as the new key for the room. It's a bit hard to find so make sure you take the business card or have the address written down for the taxi drivers. Always bargain the price of the taxi as well as some will try to rip you off. The room is clean and very colourful. Mine was mostly a satin green with a multi-coloured chandelier. The staff are very nice, welcome drink is a nice touch. Buffet breakfast here was the best we had on our tour of Morocco.
