Royal Decameron Tafoukt Beach Hotel

Reviewed November 20, 2012

Just back from a late break 7 day stay with my husband and two friends. Excellent weather with one rainy morning but by the afternoon we were back soaking up the rays. Very relaxing time in a quiet area of Agadir. Private beach was handy but on some days the Atlantic breeze whistled a bit but not as far as the pool! Could do with pool being heated but meant it was quiet around there for reading and sunbathing. Towel system was a bit odd with being closed midday and late afternoon but not a problem really. Took them to the room and changed them next day.
We were a bit wary about the language problem but every member of staff we spoke to had basic English and with my schoolgirl French to help out we managed taxis, markets cafes and bars. The entertainment staff put on a show each night and whilst predominantly in French a lot of songs were in English and dance is universal whether you are French, Spanish or German.
The staff in the restaurant were very friendly and attentive bringing our drinks each meal with out being asked and tables cleared promptly. Meals were very good and a varied selection with a theme each day. Only complaint was that we left the cafe bar till the last day for lunch and realised we had been missing a treat - the best pizzas we've had in a long time. Our meal in the a la carte restaurant was very good with all inclusive drinks and a 3 course meal and coffee to follow.
Rooms were spacious and airy but not first rate aircon - not uncomfortable though even though it was 30 plus degrees. Cleaned well every day with fresh towels.
Only negative was our room was on the first floor facing the pool - first night party went on till 12 and we were in bed by 11 but managed an hour of disco. Next two nights were fine but then the basement night club disco was on till after 3am and whilst we couldnt hear the music clearly the vibrations through the hotel were awful. If you are partying till 3 not a problem but if you are an early bird ask for a room away from the main reception block. Didnt spoil an excellent weeks holiday.

Room Tip: Avoid 130 and rooms in the same block as the reception because of the night club

Had a nice holiday at this hotel and weather was fabulous (in November!!) The hotel itself was not bad, food was very good (loved especially the fresh fruit and vegetables) and the pool area was nice.

However, we found a few annoying things:
- the hotel has a gym but that's very shabby, can't really have a proper workout there
- no shampoo or shower gel in rooms (although the hotel is all-inclusive!)
- everything is in French (for example, if you have kids and plan to put them in kids club, that's not really an option unless your kids are fluent in french)
- the service was often very lazy across the board
- pool towel service was inpractical

Room Tip: choose a sea-view room

Travelled to this hotel with a group of friends, initially was a little worried regarding other reviews that stated only French speaking. We are English and had no problems communicating with anyone. We actually met a lot of different cultures here, all very friendly. The staff here are fantastic, the customer service is very good, staff are always attentive and will go the extra mile to help you out. The food is excellent and plenty of it. Entertainment ie dance team are brilliant, it appears that the staff are looked after well here also. Out and about, we booked a tour with Faisal the hotel rep and went fishing, would recommend it, we were made to feel welcome and eventually caught fish, which was then BBQ'd, so if you like fresh fish this is the trip for you. We went to Sofitel nightclub, definitley worth a visit when the live bands are on. Would definitely recommend this hotel, and would revisit in the future.

Room Tip: Room 613 was quiet and spacious for three.

This hotel is one of the best hotels we have had the pleasure to stay in. The food is excellent with a wide variety and different themes each night. The drinks were great in that cold bottled beer and a variety of spirits were on offer on all inclusive. Schwepps and coca cola were plentiful. No rola cola here! The entertainment was great and the reps were excellent, very friendly and helpful. The main language is French but didnt cause us English folks any problems. The reps and staff were very accommodating.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and airconditioned. Avoid the main reception building if you can. The noise from the nightclubs downstairs can be a little disturbing at 4 am. If you cant beat em join em so wasnt an issue for us! After bringing it to the attention of the management we were moved to a sea front view which was amazing.

The pool is great, clean and well kept. The hotel has its own beach which is fantastic. No hassle and is peaceful. The beach is very busy at weekends however with locals but isnt a problem on the private beach. Its very handy, walk straight out of the dining area straight onto the beach. Parasols and sun loungers readily available both on the beach and by the pool.

The restuarant is clean and the staff there are excellent and very helpful. Bottled water was readily available and essential as the weather was gloriously hot. There is a restuarant onsite, Cafe Del Mar which we would highly recommend. Its included in the all inclusive package and the food was delicious.

People had warned us having blond hair could be an issue. Two women away on holiday alone but we had no dififculties or harassment. We loved it and we will be going back next year.

Morocco has a closed currency and cannot be exchanged outside of Morocco. You have to change it on arrival or whenever required and then change it back before you leave. You wont be able to change it back to sterling in the UK.

two thumbs up!

Room Tip: Block 600 sea view rooms.... amazing!

We just got back yesterday and had a relaxing stay. The staff were mostly friendly especially the restaurant staff and most of the bar staff, especially if you made an effort to talk French (which they don't expect from the English guest). From what I have read and from talking to other guests I think the quality of your stay depends on the room you get. We had a room to the left of the pool which was a decent size with a 30ft terrace with views of the pool. You could hear the music/ entertainment going on faintly until midnight which didn't bother us. As for the room it was cleaned daily with fresh towels. The room was a bit tired. Some minor cracks on the wall, and lighting is poor. We had the air conditioning on all the time and made a small difference but as it was not too hot I'm not sure how good it would be in the heat of summer. I think the rooms at the entrance to the hotel get some noise from the nightclub below.
I agree with the other recent comments about the drinks, although we liked the wine (but we only drank the red) and will also add that the fruit juice tasted more like un-diluted cordial; very sweet and strong (they did have fesh organge juice for breakfast).
The food was great although we didn't care much for the breakfast, great if you like eggs (scrambled/ hard boiled/ omelette/ eggy bread).
The position of the hotel is great; it's close to the restaurants and bars and a 20 min walk to the marina. The beach is across the promenade with lots of loungers where the street sellers are not allowed in (although a firm 'no merci' worked a treat). Only negative was you had to walk across the promenade back to the hotel grounds to get a drink or have a shower/ use the toilets.
The entertainment staff are supplied and paid for by a French tour operator so therefore all in French, although some of the shows we watched and enjoyed. It does get nosing around the pool during the day but there are some times when it is quiet when the staff are on their lunch break.
Agadir itself is a great place for the October sun, don't expect sun every day, I did my research before we went and expected some misty days, which we got, but mainly 28-33c. The nights get chilly and some times damp. We had a massage, went horse riding (all found through trip advisor) and went jet biking.
The people are all generally very friendly and we felt safe walking along the resort day and night. We were expecting to be hassled more but was no where near as much as Egypt and Tunisia.

We stayed in room 631 and so I can't comment about the other rooms. Ours was clean, spacious with a large terrace and a balcony with sea view, the decor was bland but the bed was comfortable and towels were changed on a daily basis. There were no drinks making facilities but there was a quiet fridge.

The staff were very obliging and courteous especially if tipped, e.g. we were interested in the harissa paste availble as a relish for cold meats and a waiter "provided" us with a large jar to take home. We had drinks brought to our sun beds around the pool and in glass glasses not plastic. Which brings me to the drinks. Gin, whisky, vodka and white rum were all dire, the only beer is Stork, bottled and extremely average. Being predominently a French populated hotel, the Pastis was fine! Local wine is free flowing and ranges from "ok if I must drink it", to "no thanks, I've lost my taste buds drinking the 45 proof Pastis".
Day four saw an Atlantic mist roll in, not the hotels fault, Day six, there was no hot water. Another English guest complained of disco noise at 4 a.m. but we were on the other side of this large complex of buildings and only had a problem on Saturday night around the MacDonalds where the locals noisily gather.
We agree with the other contributors, the food was very good with plenty of choice and the "Animation team" ,(why hotels believe that their guests need constant water aerobics/yoga/dance lessons for entertainment is beyond me, as was the man dressed as a chicken but the French seemed to appreciate him), left you in peace if you politely declined to take part in their version of pass the parcel with a football?
A very grand lobby with a gent serving mint tea was a nice touch but we would have prefered the taxi which was promised to pick us up from the airport, only to be met with disinterest by the sour faced receptionist. However, taxis are easily available outside the hotel entrance and charge 20 Euros to the airport. Our ancient Mercedes had rather attractive wood effect lino on the floor!
There is an army of staff tending to the pool, the hedges, trees etc. and the overall impression was a good one and I wouldn't disuade anyone from staying at the Tafoukt, but only an average score from me.

Room Tip: avoid rooms near the nightclub.

After having been in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech for a few days and then the beauty of the Atlas Mountains my husband and I were looking forward to a change of pace and meeting my brothers and their spouses for a week on the beach at the DeCameron in Agadir.
The hotel lobby is pleasant enough and our room facing the beach and promenade was spacious. Yes the promenade stays fairly busy until early in the morning but even with the windows open we didn’t find it too distracting. The food was good and as we seemed to always sit at the same table for most of our meals we got to know our wait staff and they us. They were very charming, attentive and as soon as they saw us would know to bring the wine to the table. Their English was pretty good and between their English and our French we had fun interpreting each other. We did have one meal in the other restaurant and in all honesty it wasn't any better than the regular buffet. The rest of the staff, housekeeping , bartenders etc were all friendly , there was only one lady at the front desk who wasn’t particularly helpful. Tipping is also appreciated.
The hotel guests are predominately French and so understandably all the pool games and entertainment is presented in French. We are not really interested in that so wasn’t a big deal although it was loud if you wanted to sit by the pool. The beach area is very nice and there are miles of beach and promenade to walk. There were a couple of evenings of entertainment that were very good. Unfortunately our last two days there it rained but it didn’t seem to distract the locals from being on the beach.
There are some souks by the hotel and we did go to the main market as well but as with anywhere you get bombarded by the souk owners trying to sell you something. One word I learned ‘la’ (no) came in very handy.
Overall I would rate the hotel as good especially for the price but maybe find a better location than Agadir as I don't think it represents a true example of what Morocco has to offer. Try a few days going through the Atlas Mountains if you want to discover the true Morocco.

Room Tip: Facing the beach or promenade
