What a magnificent building this hotel is. Colonial French design combines with Arab decor to create unsurpassed potential. Such a pity, then, that its service and overall management are so poor. The hotel is government-owned and managed, which presumably explains the lack of maintenance and general service fatigue.
As other reviews have said, the rooms urgently need upgrading and refurbishment. The beds are comfortable enough, but the rooms are let down by non-functional heating and aircon, no comfortable chair (there is a desk chair), ancient plumbing and broken bathroom fittings, small and old TVs, windows that let in the noise, and a weak to non-existent internet connection.
The cleaning staff give a distinct impression of laziness and will be found every morning sitting barefooted on the floor in the corridor chatting and laughing loudly - not pleasant if you happen to sleeping in a nearby room. They might or might not replenish your tea/coffee sachets and drinking water. On a couple of occasions, I found my things in the cupboard had been gone through, so it is a good idea to make sure you lock up everything of value.
The internet in the room is hopeless, although you may get a decent signal in the small hours. The reception will say that it’s a temporary problem, but it’s long-term temporary. Try disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly – that sometimes worked for me.
Breakfast offers a modest but sufficient selection of items, and the breads are particularly good.
On the whole, this hotel could be - but is not - a true gem. By no stretch of the imagination does it deserve the 5-stars it claims – realistically, more like 2 or 3 stars for service - but its relatively central location will make it convenient for most business travellers. It hovers at just above zero on the value-for-money index. Under good private management, it could surely become one of Africa's great hotels.
