Hotel El-Djazair Ex Saint George
Ranked #5 of 27 Hotels in Algiers
Reviewed February 2, 2012

What a magnificent building this hotel is. Colonial French design combines with Arab decor to create unsurpassed potential. Such a pity, then, that its service and overall management are so poor. The hotel is government-owned and managed, which presumably explains the lack of maintenance and general service fatigue.

As other reviews have said, the rooms urgently need upgrading and refurbishment. The beds are comfortable enough, but the rooms are let down by non-functional heating and aircon, no comfortable chair (there is a desk chair), ancient plumbing and broken bathroom fittings, small and old TVs, windows that let in the noise, and a weak to non-existent internet connection.

The cleaning staff give a distinct impression of laziness and will be found every morning sitting barefooted on the floor in the corridor chatting and laughing loudly - not pleasant if you happen to sleeping in a nearby room. They might or might not replenish your tea/coffee sachets and drinking water. On a couple of occasions, I found my things in the cupboard had been gone through, so it is a good idea to make sure you lock up everything of value.

The internet in the room is hopeless, although you may get a decent signal in the small hours. The reception will say that it’s a temporary problem, but it’s long-term temporary. Try disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly – that sometimes worked for me.

Breakfast offers a modest but sufficient selection of items, and the breads are particularly good.

On the whole, this hotel could be - but is not - a true gem. By no stretch of the imagination does it deserve the 5-stars it claims – realistically, more like 2 or 3 stars for service - but its relatively central location will make it convenient for most business travellers. It hovers at just above zero on the value-for-money index. Under good private management, it could surely become one of Africa's great hotels.

Without a doubt this is the best hotel in Algiers, unless you prefer the Hilton isolation or the Aurassi's socialist architecture. El-Djazair (formerly St George) has stunning architecture, magnificent old-style internal design, good location, excellent security if you're concerned with that. The restaurants offer excellent quality food, although pricy. The pool is accessible both in winter (it's covered) and summer time, and a fish by the poolside is a treat. DO NOT MISS a walk in the gardens, they are definitely the hotel's asset! Rooms are OK, they lack electric plugs though and a bit dwindling but the stay is worth it, especially considering the competition.

Room Tip: If you're staying there on a week end (Algerian week end is Friday/Saturday) make sure to ask fo...

I stayed in El Djazair hotel for a 6-day business trip. One of the main problems I faced was the unstable internet connection. The hotel is quite old and they employ data connections over power lines, dedicating a WiFi access point for each 2 or 3 rooms. Each occupant receives a username and password to access the nearest access point. The first problem is that the access point is placed INSIDE that room, which means that if you are in one of the neighboring rooms, and your access point needs to be restarted or maintained, it is subject to whether the resident in that room is available or not, sleeping, etc. The IT staff are very nice and helpful, but the configuration is quite complex and annoying. I acquired another username and password for my smart phone through the IT staff. Other than that, I had dinner at the hotel a couple of times, there are only two restaurants, the first offering Algerian and French cuisine, while the other offering Chinese food. They're both alright, but if you're looking for a true Algerian dinner, I would definitely recommend that you head to El Djenina restaurant which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in Algiers.

This has been my third (and probably last) visit to El-Djazair Hotel in Algiers.
The only atout of the hotel is the central location which it makes it very easy to reach every place in town notwithstanding the traffic.
The hotel needs now a radical renovation also in the management: the rooms are old, the air conditioning doesn't work (and in Algiers this is a real problem!), breakfast is poor (bread is old and dry, there are only three different kind of cereals, cakes are also dry...), the cleaning ladies and the other staff members start their chatting out of the rooms very early in the morning, the fitness center is not adequate....).
The staff is nice and helpful, the restaurant is not bad and there is a free wireless internet connection but the hotel is rated (and the prices are those of a) 5-stars and in order to keep this standards it needs to be restructured and redecorated.
