El Aurassi Hotel
Ranked #2 of 26 Hotels in Algiers
Reviewed March 18, 2013

I stayed at El Aurassi together with colleagues from 24 February to 01 March 2013. We were organizing a meeting. As such, the review is not only addressing to tourists but also to professionals wanting to access El Aurassi's meeting facilities. One of the worst experiences ever. Although the hotel has been renovated, nothing justifies the price of 200Euros/day. Same thing for lunches 45Euros/day. The conference room A2 was smelling sewage. The staff, Director included, was not at all helpful. They are not at service oriented as the hotel is state owned. Last but not least no wifi, in the rooms but incredibly enough in the meeting rooms. Honestly one of the worse hotels I have ever stayed at and I am not a difficult person. To be avoided at all cost.....

Last time I stayed in Aurassi was 14 years ago... Since then, hotel was closed for 2 years, and now it is like a new hotel, with the same astonishing architecture, magnificient view, spacy halls and rooms. All that is very, very, very good. Compared with Sheraton (until now, for me, the best hotel in Algiers), only for this Aurassi was ranked first. Also, the location near city centre is good if you have business/leisure in the area.
But... a lot of bad things make this a not so good experience. Some examples:
- Breakfast is poor, very very poor. Like a 2* hotel - if you avoid eating salads and tomato on breakfast, you are limited to bread, butter, croissants and few things more. Eggs only if you ask (and they take LONG to arrive), only orange juice (anda bad), no pancakes, no good cheese, nothing...
- Wifi? What is wifi??
- smething to eat after 23:00? Only in your room...

That's not so good for an expensive 5* hotel. So, I still prefer Sheraton...

Room Tip: With bay view

Renovated, expensive but good. Paid about 200 E per night, breakfast included, booked directly at hotel. Very good bed, fantastic mattress, linen and nice bathroom. Hi speed internet good but only wired, no wi-fi available, which is a shame. My room was spacious and I would repeat if back there. In the negative, breakfast not at the same level than room, too basic, no prepared fruit, just some full oranges and apples there, no natural juices, service pretty lousy, cleaned tables once in a while throwing leftovers to the ground, which for a 5 stars hoted is unacceptable. A 25 euros breakfast in Algeria should be much, much better.

The good news: the hotel been refurnished recently and this is a real success from design perspective. the room are clean and nicely furnished. The restaurant are very good. The view on the bay is absolutely stunning.
Now let's talk about the rest...
What they need to improve ( really):
- first there is no wireless in the hotel (I could not believe it) and if you want to access to the Internet you should beg the concierge to provide you the user/password...
- next the service: the service is not at the minimum expected for a 5*... Concierge is rude, front desk is understaffed while checking out despite 2 crew chatting on the back, airport shuttle never picked me at the airport despite an email and a call, business Center should open at 8 but do not expect accessing before 8.30 or 9.... The fitness center?? always closed...The worst part is no one seems to care about that.

If you have time and do not bother with the above, go. This is a good place to sleep, eat and with a stunning view. If you plan to do business and (like me) want to have everything available when YOU need it... Select the Hilton or the Sofitel.

Hope it helps

The rooms are clean, comfortable with beautiful view on the port. The hotel was rennovated 4 months ago which explain the cleanliness of the rooms. The breakfast is moderate with no much varieties. The service is not up to a 5 stars hotel service but is fair for algerian standards. The hotel is well located in the heart of Algiers but a little bit far from markets. El Aurassi is a governmental Hotel. Overall the hotel is good but it's better for the same price to be in a hotel chain in Algeria.

I have stayed there twice, the hotel is comfortable, the bed is great and the view is spectacular. The restaurants are ok, but not brilliant and again a little pricy. The lack of wireless is an issue, but you can access the business centre at a cost. Quite frankly at the cost of a room, the Internet should be included. The breakfast is average for the cost (USD 62.50 or 5000 da). Security is good and the staff are very friendly. I will stay there again, but hope the change the Internet and breakfast options.

This hotel has been recently renovated and this shows in the guest rooms, which are nicely appointed with good cable internet. But other than that, this hotel offers almost nothing. The gym and spa are closed with no explanation why. The tennis court is closed "they think.".There is no wi-fi anywhere. The restaurants and food are nothing but ordinary. it is the kind of hotel that makes sense if you are on a short business trip and don't care about much more than the room and breakfast and you're not paying out of your own pocket.
