If you are ever looking for a good place to eat in the city center, go for le caracoya! More than a restaurant it's an experience that starts behind a plain door. It's got the feeling of a club but the service of a good place. The indoor terrace with a little water fountain can accomodate over 50 people and the service is really good. Friendly atmosphere and a clientele of habituals make it a must if you are in Algiers. The menu offers fish, meat and Algerian specialties. Try the fish soup, it's delish. Their mechoui 'broiled lamb' is to die for and you can end with a lemon sorbet. Also, the little appetizers offered when you arrive are one of a kind. Ask for the spicy sardine patties! They have a good wine selection and it's worth trying the Aboukir and fleur d'Aboukir Algerian wines. The downside is the price. The bill can be on the high side so make sure you ask for the wine price when you order.

This place has apparently been in business since 1966, and has hardly changed - in a good way. It looks closed, but a ring on the door bell will see you led in to atmospheric restaurant, with two indoor dining rooms, and a large covered terrace out the back.
The speciality of the house was fish, and as you're looking at the standard menu, the waiter brings a platter of today's catch to your table to look at. All the fish we saw was beautifully fresh, so we ordered bream and ray. They were served very simply, with a light sauce, and some veg on the side. The rest of the menu looked good with a range of meat and fish options.
They had an extensive range of wines, though no list, and the service was friendly and professional. Will come back.
