“Pleasant bike ride”

Rode this trail the first weekend in September and really enjoyed it. It's about 25 miles from Ankeny to Woodyard. It's paved, flat and quite wide. The highlight of course is the bridge over the Des Moines river between Madrid and Woodyard. Also stopped at bars that are right along the trail in Madrid and Slater. I would recommend starting in Woodyard and head east and go as far as you want before returning. The west end of the trail is the most scenic.

“What a beautiful view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2013

My family and I took a tip to try the High Trestle Trail for a great view of the bridge and lights. What we were not prepared for was the view of the valley below. Wow...what a view! Yes, the lights came on around 7:30 or so and were beautiful. As a matter of fact this was unlike anything I had seen before. The trail across the bridge is nice and wide so no issues running into others. This was a very enjoyable spot and especially nice during the evening. We recommend it for one and all...not just bikers.

“Awesome trail!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

My husband & I went here & rode this trail both in the daytime and evening with the lighting on the bridge! Awesome to see & ride across with the lights on! There were lots of people there, but there was plenty of room for all! Very nice! Have recommended this one to several others already!

The High Trestle Trail is a great place to get outside for a walk with people of all levels of fitness. Everyone will enjoy the time together and the scenery. The Trestle is really a "don't miss it". Take the time to stop and enjoy!

“an unexpected treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

As a 30 year, born again biker, I try to do 800 to 1000 miles a summer, mostly local stuff.
My wife and I recently started doing more "rails to trails" type rides and have found Iowa to have some great trails. This one is a jewel in central Iowa. We only did about 20 miles of the trail but the section between Madrid and Woodward crossing the High Trestle Bridge was awesome. We crossed in the morning and went back near dusk to see the lights; it was more than worth it. There were a lot of people, but seeing the bridge lit the way it is was absolutely beautiful, "stunning" some have said and I agree. Highly recommend this trip.
