A little out of the way in NW Ames, this place has class. Desserts are awesome. The breakfast menu is a good change of pace. Weather permitting, sit outside and enjoy the service.

Went for lunch with a girlfriend and we both enjoyed the veggie burgers! The server was extremely friendly and the desserts were delicious!

We were brought here by a friend's granddaughter, an Iowa State University student. We were planning a night at the theater, needing to be there by 7 PM, so arrived at 5 for an early pre-show dinner. Service was impeccable. The 3 of us all ordered different entrees, all of which arrived perfectly cooked and attractively presented. It clearly deserves its #1 rating. Incidentally, on a Tuesday night, when we left after our meal there was a long line of hopeful diners waiting to get in....a tribute to their reputation.

My daughter (ISU student), wife and I dined at The Cafe on a Saturday night. Dinner starts at 5PM so be there before 5 to be seated with a minimal wait (hint). We have eaten in several locations in Ames including Hickory Park (average on the BBQ scale). I enthusiastically recommend The Cafe as a first choice for dinner. Our selections included the mac & cheese (best you will ever taste!) pasta bolognese and turkey pot pie. I had the pasta bolognese which was absolutely delicious.
My wife had the pot pie which she also described as excellent. The service was very good despite the long wait they were experiencing. The desserts looked wonderful however we were all too full from dinner to enjoy. The restaurant atmosphere was warm, clean and comfortable.
Bypass the restaurant chains and enjoy a local fare that is levels above the others at a cost that was very reasonable (for 3 it was $40 without alcohol).
