“Easter Weekend 2013”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Just dropping in again. I've reviewed this place a couple times before but wanted to confirm my earlier reviews. The Iowa House B&B in Ames Iowa is a clean, comfortable and relaxing place to stay. It is extremely convenient to the ISU campus. We most recently stayed here during an Easter weekend visit to see out daughter at ISU and again we leave with no complaints. I will however make one suggestion. I like to move from room to room on different stays just to get a good feel for each room or floor. This time we elected to try out the second floor and maybe next time we'll move back to the third (top) floor. It is a beautiful historic home and therefore has the the proverbial squeaky wooden floor joists. There is nothing the owner/proprietor can do about this other than make the rest of the house as nice as possible, and this they do very well. Simply put the top floor is quieter and the second of first floors. If by chance the top floor was full when I go to make reservations the noise level from the second of even first floor would NOT be enough to keep me from booking an open room at this lovely bed and breakfast Inn.

My husband and I stayed one night in room 206. The place is extremely clean and close to campus. The breakfast was excellent. The place only had a few other guest the night we stayed and it was extremely quiet. The room doors are heavy and steel. Room 206 door stucked a bit and my only complaint of the place is the AC unit. We could never get it to work. We could get the red light to come on but never had any air. Thankfully, it was a cool night and we opened the windows. Additionally, they had a fan. As there is no staff post 8pm there was no one to ask what we were doing wrong. I am sure it was user error. We did follow the instructions in the guest information.

Room 206 is at the end of the hall away from the stairs. This could be great if the place was full. Room 206 is one of the smaller rooms. It has everything that the other rooms has minus a seating chair. There is one for the desk but not one to sit in and relax. Whirlpool tub. Microwave, mini refrigerator. Great soap and shampoos. No wardrobe. There are a few hanger and hooks but limited. The room face the baseball fields and parking lot. The doors to the kitchen are on the same wall. As we had our windows open we heard the chief come in. Not a huge issue for us. Sheets and towel top notch.

It was nice to see many of the other rooms as they were not occupied. They all have different furniture. All lovely decorated. The place smells amazing.

Overall a great place in this small college town. When we return to Ames we will look here first. Hopefully they will have a room.

This was a two night business trip that turned into a pleasure trip because of the Iowa House. The room had all the amenities I hoped for, plus more. The staff was very attentive and professional. Both days, the breakfasts were perfect. The plates from the kitchen were very appealing and appetizing. I enjoyed the warm and friendly public spaces. The building was very tastefully appointed and very welcoming. I am a frequent travelor to Europe and found the Iowa House to be at the top rated of small hotels found anywhere. I will definitely be returning to the Iowa House and telling my friends about it. Betty R.

Room Tip: My stay was in # 202, a very nice sized corner room that provided comfort and quiet.

We have stayed here twice in the past year and both times it has been wonderful! Everything is very clean and comfortable. Loved the comfy bedding, the amenities in the rooms, and the homey atmosphere of the building. Parking is nice and close to the door. The staff are friendly and helpful. The chef prepares a delicious breakfast and assembles it beautifully on the plate. It is within walking distance of the Iowa State campus. We have a daughter attending Iowa State and a son starting there in the Fall so we anticipate enjoying many more stays at the Iowa House!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely. I don't think you could go wrong choosing any of the rooms. We have...

Traveling with a friend, we stayed in the first-floor suite (2 bedrooms with a bath off the connecting hallway). Check-in was smooth, rooms immaculate, the building (a former fraternity house) interesting, decor of common rooms comfortable and inviting. A gas fireplace in the main-floor living room was welcome on this cold, snowy day. Evening snacks (biscotti, snack mix, makings for hot cider, tea, coffee, etc.) were enjoyable. Parking was adequate and convenient. Breakfast was tasty: grapefruit and/or orange juice, assorted pastries, omelets to order, bacon, fresh fruit, toast or English muffins. Excellent coffee. Breakfast was prepared by a graduate student (Carl) who was friendly as well as professional; the food presentation was unusually attractive, perhaps because he is an artist.
I've stayed in several Ames hotels, and this would definitely be my first choice when I make another trip.

Nice enough place and location to Iowa State Campus was good.
Breakfast was average to below average, amazingly small portions and one morning most of the yolk was missing from my egg, nothing special.
Bed was comfortable but heater was noisy and couldn't turn completely off to cool down room, Staff was friendly.

Beautifully decorated, quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was average but totally credible. Fresh fruit, country potatoes, scrambled eggs and ham, orange juice with very good coffee. The beds were comfortable (wish they had king size beds) and the rooms came supplied with a fan AND a sound machine. Nice. The room we were in was so quiet tho we hardly needed them. There is a huge room on the bottom floor filled with comfortable seating, a big screen and a dvd player for guests use. It was clean enough (I'm pretty picky). Clean enough= dust on the blinds but no "random" hair in the bathroom. We'll go back.

Room Tip: Ask for the room at the end of the hall if you are looking for quiet.
