“Great way to spend a day!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

We spent a day visiting all the interesting shops (furniture, meat, woolen mill, antique, clothing, quilt/craft, and General stores) in Amana, Iowa. The shopkeepers were very welcoming and helpful!! Make sure you purchase some "Amana Beets" at the General Store or the Meat Shop before you leave - the beets are excellent and sell out quickly! We had an excellent meal at the Ronneburg Restaurant and the wait staff was also excellent. Serena's Coffee Cafe in Amana is a great place to take a break from shopping - be sure to try one of their refreshing/filling root beer floats!!! If you are looking for more shopping in the area, make sure you check out the Tanger Outlet Mall in nearby Williamsburg. We stayed at the wonderful Homewood Suites in nearby Coralville and found it conveniently located to the Amana Colonies, Tanger Outlet, and the Coral Ridge Mall.

“Nice but we must have visited off season”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2014

We visited the Amana Colonies on a whim when we were traveling around Iowa. My wife and I thought it would be interesting and overall I would say that is true. We were blessed with nice weather and enjoyed walking the area. We enjoy these types of areas with a neat history and have learned to live with the conversion to tourist trap that so often happens over time.

The shops are a bit touristy but I am not sure one could expect much else. We found the staff to be welcoming in general. This is certainly a great place to visit and one I would not recommend missing but we visited in March and it was obvious that they were only just starting to prep for a busier Spring and Summer. A few stores we were very excited to visit were wither not open or not really ready for visitors.

Be sure to stop in just know that the store hours are variable and can be irregular.

“Great day trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2014

We spent a day touring the 7 small towns that comprise the Amana Colonies. We did some shopping in the quaint stores and enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana. Great place to visit. It probably takes 3-4 hours to visit all the towns and not feel rushed. Amana is the "main" town - lots of stores, restaurants and antique shops to visit.

“Wished We'd Had More Time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

Needing a bit of a break on our trip to a new job we decided to take the afternoon and explore a bit. We enjoyed browsing through a few of the little shops. My favorite was the quilt shop. There are so many gorgeous quilts on display, quite a few of which you can buy the kits to make. We also loved the chocolate shop. If you stop for lunch and are expecting traditional German fare, you might be a little disappointed. Not that the food tasted bad... but we were posted to Germany years ago so we know what good German food should taste like and this fell a little short. The service however was excellent!

As others have commented, things were a little pricey in some of the shops but that is to be expected in a community of this sort. The prices at the quilt shop though I found to be very reasonable and comparable to other quality quilt shops.

I would love to spend some time exploring more of the villages (there are 7) another time.

Not sure about the historical value, but a great amount of nice gift shops and food items to pick from! Fudge and cookies were amazing!
