We knew we would not be spending a lot of time at our hotel, so we were looking for a basic room in a hotel with a pool. The room was clean and met our needs for the weekend. The room was a bit small with a lot of furniture, which was difficult with a small child. The pool is very basic and quite small, which suited our needs fine for this stay.

The location was convenient since it is right off I-80. It is very convenient to Adventureland and there are restaurants in the area.

The breakfast exceeded my expectations. I was expecting cold cereal and breads only, but there was also pancakes, buscuits with gravy and fresh fruit. The breakfast area was quite small though, and with a full hotel that made for a tight squeeze.

Bottom line ... if I was looking for a basic room again, I would consider staying here, but if I am looking for a hotel that will be an integral part of our trip, I will look elsewhere.

We stayed here with another couple for a "grown up" weekend without the kids. Our main intention was to go to Adventureland, and I wanted a hotel close-by. This hotel is on the back side of the amusement park, but it's a short enough walk around to the front gate of the park. The front desk staff was friendly, but as stated in another review, often absent. As we didn't need much after checking in, this wasn't a big problem for us. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Our king sized bed was a bit firm, but that was fine for us. We loved having a refrigerator and a microwave in the room. We also had a desk with an office chair and a comfortable armchair in the room. The bathroom was standard, with a tub/shower combo, and again, I found it very clean. The continental breakfast was nothing spectacular, but still a nice bonus. They also have a popcorn machine with popcorn available throughout the day, and often a plate of cookies sitting in the lobby. Can't complain about having free snacks!! The pool is small and on the weekend, quite busy. We were sad there was no hottub, but honestly we probably wouldn't have had much time to use one anyway. All in all, this place was warm, welcoming and comfortable. It suited our needs as a place to rest and recoop after playing at Adventureland!

This Best Western seems to be relatively new. It is directly across the street from Adventureland, which is it's only asset.

The rooms are extremely small, housing two beds, a table & 2 chairs, an armoire, and a cabinet for the fridge and microwave. The bathroom houses the toilet, sink, and tub. For a family of four, there is very little space to move around.

The breakfast area is even smaller for all the guests at this accommodation. It only holds six tables and a small outside couch. The items served are four types of high sugar/low fiber cereal, two waffle makers, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, bread, muffins, biscuits & gravy, and orange and apple juice.

The other downfall of this hotel is the service at the front desk and Wi-Fi. Both are horrible! Each time I went to the front desk, including to check in, check out, and to even ask a question, no one could be found no matter how many times I rang the bell. I had to end up calling the hotel while standing there to find someone.

If you want a hotel for its location and nothing else, then it's fine. If not, look elsewhere!

We chose this hotel primarily for its location. We wanted to be able to walk to adventureland and have a hotel room as a convenient rest break when needed. We could easily walk across the street and parking lot to the main gate. Our room had 2 comfortable queen beds. The size of the rooms are not overly big...just a narrow passage for walking but it did have a microwave and frig which is a nice, additional feature that not every hotel has. The continental breakfast had a nice variety and staff kept adding items when needed. The major drawback is a too small breakfast room and not enough seating. Both mornings we had difficulty finding a spot to sit. Also it would be nice if breakfast hours were extended past 9 a.m, especially since Adventureland doesn't open til 10 am. Both mornings I had to wake up kids so they could get some breakfast. Extending even til 9:30 would make it more convenient and also might help with the limited room space. We enjoyed the pool but would have liked to have a hot tub in the pool area. But overall, I highly recommend this hotel, especially if going to Adventureland.

The Best Western, Altoona, Ia, was a great place to stay. We were there for a girls weekend. We booked the large room and it was worth it. Upon arrival we were greeted with cookies and popcorn. The room was clean and had plenty of room for all of us and our stuff. We were able to take a shuttle to the casino to watch the horse races. This was another great perk. Breakfast was very busy with limited seating, but they had plenty of food, including waffles and biscuits and gravy. The staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay in this hotel again!

My other half and I took a long road trip across the Midwest from Colorado to Indiana. We planned our trip around places we wanted to explore, and Des Moines was one of the cities on our list. We looked up the Best Western Inns in the surrounding area and noticed this one, which was new to the Best Western family, recently remodeled from a Heartland Inn to BW, and was 100% smoke free. The few Trip Advisor reviews were positive, so we booked our stay. We were greeted by Karla, who is a GEM! She greeted us like we were coming to stay at her house. She put us in one of the suite rooms, recommended a great place to eat nearby, and answered any and all questions we had about Altoona/DesMoines and surrounding area. We unpacked the car, went up to our room and were pleasantly surprised with the new furnishings. The room had a couch and a chair, a nice LCD television, a cupboard with the microwave and fridge in it, a pillowtop mattress, and a great comforter on the bed....we were very pleased and relaxed in our room. The new owners have totally refurbished the hotel. all new carpet, paint and furniture. The one negative is there is no spa at this facility, just a pool. We looked at the pool but did not swim. We also did not eat breakfast, but the breakfast area is very nicely set up. Karla stressed that we should try their breakfast, but we chose to go to a diner a few miles away. We add places we really appreciate and like to a list to remind us to stay there again, and we have added the Best Western Altoona Inn to our list for future trips...they treat you like you are at home!
