Owner description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

“Beautiful views”

The Pali Lookout is worth the short drive from Honolulu. The history is interesting and the views are stunning. The strange thing about the lookout is that parking is on a self paid parking system. We didn't realize this until we left; I doubt most visitors paid for parking either. What is the point?

Easy access to a beautiful area for a view of Oahu. You pay a minimum fee to park but worth the expense.

“Terrific Views - Parking is Unnecessarily Complicated”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

The view is terrific, and it’s a great place to stop off on a hot day. Do be aware that it’s a lot cooler here though than in Waikiki. When we drove up here, our car thermometer showed a drop of 8 degrees so do be prepared for that as well as the very windy conditions. I would rate the site a 5, but the parking machine a 0.

The fee of $3 is rather stiff for a 15 minute stop. But that actually didn’t bother me nearly as much as the hassle of getting a ticket. You have to enter your license plate number, which meant I had to go back to the car to write the number down (as it was a car rental). I then had the option of putting in $3 in CHANGE (how many tourists who aren’t from the U.S. are going to have $3 in change, as the U.S. has $1 notes?) or I had the alternative of paying with a credit card. This is the most unnecessarily complicated parking machine of any tourist site I’ve ever visited anywhere in the world...and English is my first language. I pity the tourists who aren’t that fluent in English and who have to thumb through their dictionary just to understand how to pay for a parking ticket! The guy in front of us (who was fluent in English) had to try a couple of times before figuring out the machine and then he kindly turned around and explained it to us. I found this site to be such a marked contrast to the other very tourist friendly/well-managed sites in Oahu.

In summary, do visit the site as it’s well worth visiting. But just know what to expect when it comes to the parking, then you can just go with it, not get overly frustrated and simply enjoy the wonderful views.

“Not the best part”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

The Pali lookout is very beautiful and fun but if you are looking for a hike (an easy one) try hiking to the Pali lookout! You can literally start at the bottom of the mountain and hike your way up. Its an amazing hike through the rain forest and you get to see the Likelike falls and beautiful wildlife. I would strongly recommend this hike. You can start at the Nuuanu Golf Club or the church parking lot over on Kamehameha. There you will see a trail start. Follow it and ahead of you, you will see an old water storage, make a left where you see the pink marker. Then on just go straight and always follow the PINK ribbon markers. If you want to get to Likelike falls, after you get through the mangroves and you see the path turn into rocks look for a tree with an arrow to get to the falls. Wear sneakers (it gets muddy) and be ready to hold on to trees. Its a pretty easy hike, kids can do it, but its easier if your in shape. Bring water. At the end, you will get to Old Pali Road, the way people used to get around the mountains before Pali Highway. Then you take the old road up the mountain to Pali Lookout. I really recommend it. If you want more information just google "Old Pali Road Hike". You can also access Old Pali road from the Pali lookout. When you walk to the lookout to the right is a opening and signs that say "falling rocks go no further", pass them and keep walking pass the road closed sign and that is Old Pali road and you can walk it down instead. and dont worry its not that windy down there.

This is my favorite part in my way from waikiki to the north shore.
