The blowhole itself is a nice attraction, but the getting there was the best part. The views of the Pacific Ocean and the waves crashing along the rocky shoreline make the drive spectacular along a winding road. Although, It's quite a distance getting there, there are many designated opportunities to stop and enjoy the views along the way. There are hiking trails, fruit stands, art displays and the beautiful natural vegetation to see and explore. Keep in mind it is a bit windy on this side of the Island.

About 20 miles north of Lahaina and just north of the Honolua Bay at about mile marker 38, the Nakalele blow hole is a must see. The hike down to the blowhole from the road is about a half mile and while not difficult per se, demands a bit of attention while climbing over some rocks. The setting is prehistoric with lava rocks all about. There is action from the blowhole every few minutes, though the impressive gushers are about 15 minutes apart -- though don't set your watch to it. The closer you get the greater the thrill, but be smart and keep your distance staying off of the wet rocks closest to the hole.

This in my opinion is a must do, not only for the blowhole, which is one of the best in all of Hawaii not just Maui, but for the drive. Make sure you take the road alll the way around the west side, even when it gets bumpy and narrows to one lane. It is awesome and you wont regret it, just don't drive too fast.

The hike down wasn't too strenuous but was fairly steep so probably best to make sure you're wearing appropriate shoes. We were glad we went all the way down to the blowhole. It's impressive and beautiful- we did wait down there for a bit for it to really spout-- there were several smaller spouts in between. The heart shaped hole in the rock is a great photo opp. too. The signs warn not to step on the wet rock, and I wouldn't turn my back to the water either, as strong waves would crash over the surrounding rocks as well.

You will read a lot about the hike down to the blow hole. First, do the hike, it is worth it and kind of fun...reminded me of being a kid climbing over rocks. My wife and I are in our mid 50's and it was no big deal to hike down the hill. Take your time and be smart. The blowhole is very cool and the chance to unique pictures should not be missed. It was a nice drive to get there as well. I will go back again the next time I am on Maui.
