Driving this road is not for the faint of heart. If you like single lane cliff side roads with spectacular views of the ocean and small fishing villages then this is the trip for you! Take your time and be careful to oncoming traffic. You need to be a bit aggressive and take a bit of charge on who is stopping and who is going. Indiana Jones ride at its finest! We came from the west and north end.

“Take your time and enjoy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013 via mobile

This is a drive to start early in the day and start from west Maui. The road is not all that great and it is 1 lane with pull outs for passing oncoming cars.
Remember. The car on the mountain side of the road pulls over !! Courtesy is the name of the game here. And it's about the scenery so take the time to enjoy. It's breathtaking!!
Don't forget to stop at Lorraine's for banana bread, it's the best.
Drive carefully and enjoy.

“Scariest road ever”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

We had our trip a mapped out from the cruise port to the blowhole and then on to Lahaina. We had out Jeep Wrangler with the top down, beautiful weather, what could go wrong? What went wrong is continuing on this road from Nakalele. It was beautiful at first. Actually it was reminiscent of driving the Amalfi Coast in Italy. But then it turned incredibly scary. We found ourselves on a one lane, dirt road with many blind corners a couple hundred feet above the sea. When I say "blind" I mean there is NO WAY to see if anyone is coming. We honked our horn and drove 2mph on the turns while locals whipped around the corners without such courtesy. One point we met up with another Jeep and began arguing with who need to move and how, for us both to carry on our way. I thought for sure we would hit or fall to our deaths as we were within inches of eachother, the cliff, and the death plunge. We managed around this predicament and I told my family to let me out of the car and I would walk. YES IT WAS THAT BAD!!! I live in Michigan and grew up driving on treacherous roads and white knuckling it through some winter driving. This was the worst road experience of my life, but also the most memorable. So, consider your goal when debating whether to drive this road.

“For Young Men Who Think They're Immortal”

This Hwy 30/340 is no problem driving east to the Nakele Blowhole.
BYW, the blowhole is a great destination . . . for those who don't get too close and are sucked in!
After the blowhole the road is a BIG problem! This portion is also called the Kahekili Hwy. These 15 miles are extremely treacherous. You would need about 3 hours to drive these miserable miles. No matter how careful you are, you will be dealing very tragic scenarios/outcomes.
This is not a 1-lane road, it's about a half lane . . . and with occasional oncoming traffic.
The locals who drive this road for pleasure always drive it clockwise, from west to east. Why? . . . so that they meet oncoming vehicles they can park next to the cliff and let the oncoming drivers deal with how not to fall to their death. You have to constantly be looking for the few places that are wide enough for 2 cars to pass.
It's really not worth the risk. As to the reviewers who rave about the views, we were in terror the entire time. Our survival instinct trumped everything.

“Highway 30”

Real simple, only for the risk taker. Very scary. At points, the outside tires are literally on the cliff edge and you are praying that the founding earth will hold up. There is No way to turn around. Once you commit , you must go all the way. Do not do it with your family. If you are feeling gutsy and are young, take a crazy friend and you should have fun. I took my wife and 2 kids several years ago and this still goes down as one of the more stupid things I have done, along with driving a motor cycle 155 mph.
