We saw far more fish and turtles snorkeling from land. Do yourself a favor, rent some snorkel gear for a week and visit Honolua Bay, Black Rock, Kaheli and that's just in W.Maui.

We went snorkeling at Molokini crater today. Left from maalena harbor. The crater was about an hour boat ride from the harbor. Once there we snorkeled for about an hour. We saw a lot of brightly colored fish, beautiful coral and a moray eel!

If your main interest is snorkeling, you can have a better experience directly off a number of beaches. We (parents w 2 teens) went with Quicksilver a few weeks ago on the morning excursion. I give them 5 stars. Smiling and attentive staff, interesting cruise with lots of interesting commentary from the captain, ok food.

The snorkeling was average at best. Extremely crowded, not many fish, limited coral and no turtles in Turtle Town.

My wife and I met the boat at Maa'laea harbour slip # 80 (be advised even number slips are on the south side, even numbered on the north as there's no signage, and plenty of confusion) and found it to be a nice catamaran vessel. They served up an adequate continental breakfast of fruit, bagels, butter cream cheese and jelly. It's about an hour ride to the crater so plenty of time to give you advice and such. Once at the crater, you snorkel for two hours. The water is absolutely blueatiful and there's an ok amount of fish and coral to look at. I wasn't in absolute awe but its ok. On the ride out, Jordan had cooked up some chicken breast, pulled pork, hot dogs, and even vegi burgers for you vegans. Beer, wine, sodas accompany the meals and ride back in to turtle town where you can catch some big sea turtles lumbering around swimming. There's opportunities for purchases of pics and videos on the way in. And the main dive master also had underwater cameras for rent . There's also wet suits to rent if you're cold natured.

My husband and I had the pleasure of snorkeling Molokini this past May. The boat ride out was beautiful. It's breathtaking how blue the water is. We rode on one of the big catamarans...though the name is escaping me at the moment. Unfortunately, we were in Maui at the time of (what is apparently...) a rare South swell. The water, both along the beaches, and out at the crater, was very rough for this week-long period. You could still snorkel, but there just wasn't a lot to see. One of our guides said the fish all got out of there, to go where it was calmer and easier to feed. I would still recommend going, because whether you see fish or not, it's still an amazing experience. And I imagine it's even better when the swells aren't so big. We did see several turtles from the boat on the way back, which was very cool.
