I have driven this road twice now and recommend starting early in the morning, say around 5-or 6 am. There is not very many places to get over and off the road to get out and take pictures or just enjoy the fantastic views so if your early you won't be stopping traffic! Yes, other people don't know how to drive so pack lots of patience.

Road to Hana was worst day in maui. When u hear lots of turns its true. Every bridge, which there's a lot, is one lane. The driving under best of conditions is very tense. I saw a local behind one tourist not just honk his horn but lay on his horn the whole time until the tourist pulled over. Plan on the whole day it takes a long time. Most of the great water fall stops have very little parking. You have to park a ways away and walk on the busy narrow road. All that being said the waterfalls are beautiful if you want to hike to them. Neat stuff to see but not worth a whole day in maui. Just go to the beaches and swim with the turtles, you'll have more fun.

I drove the road to Hana last year and it was a dream ... this year I'm looking forward to do it again and this time with much more time and a nice stay in Hana.
I'm not fearful -and I have done many mountain roads in the Alpes - so it was pure fun to drive. Take you time and stop here and there - enjoy a spectacular view and a nice walk ... and don't forget the beaches ... just enjoy a nice and relaxing drive.

Not an ordinary road trip. It was amazing to drive around the east side of the island and see so many different landscapes. We were courageous enough to drive all they around, and we're glad we did. In my opinion, there's nothing to be scared about. Just drive carefully and beware of local drivers (they know the road and tend to drive quite fast). Furthermore, enjoy every stop, every view.

Very nice drive, scenery is spectacular. Stop by the Lava Tube just before entering Hana. Take your camera, drinks, snacks, walking shoes, patience for other drivers.
