FABULOUS DAY! And it is all day!
The guide picked us up at 7:30 in the morning and returned us at 7:30 in the evening. We saw everything that there was to see on the Road to Hana. The guide was knowledgeable about Maui, the Road to Hana and knew all of the right places to stop. We had a small breakfast, a stop at noon for a snack and lunch around 3 pm.
The stops were incredible. Two places were waterfalls alongside the road where you could swim if you were comfortable, the Black Stone Beach, Charles LIndbergh's grave, and a great spot in the desert/sheep area.
We swam in the ocean and enjoyed wonderful views while the tour guide drove through the scary curves and told great stories about the area.
Very worth the money and the time. Highly recommended!
To be honest, we were a bit lazy in our research prior to arriving to Maui so we ended booking some excursions through our hotel - this One Day Road to Hana Tour was one of them.
We had a party of 3 and booked pretty last minute; as such, the bus tours were already fully booked but the tour company ended up offering to provide us a private tour for the same price! - Obviously we accepted!
Car
We were in a jeep (not sure what the model was, kinda like a Toyota Ray 4) but the 2 sitting in the back felt a little cramped. It was a 4 door but not the kind we expected. (We had rented 4 door Jeep Wrangler so expected the tour company to provide the same - our mistake). Since this was going to be a 10-12 hr day a more comfortable car would have made the experience a little more fun. Regardless, the car was not an issue and would not stop me from recommending this tour.
Food
No complaints. Breakfast and lunch were provided as part of the tour package. For breakfast we each ordered different items on the menu, french toast, eggs and bacon, and a fruit platter - nothing out of the ordinary but it was all good. Lunch was a simple sandwich, soda, and chips - basically, a picnic by the beach, which was perfect. The views were so beautiful I would not have done it any other way. They even provided a table cloth so it was a "fancy" picnic.
Tour Itself
Pros
The tour itself was great. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided information regarding the history of Hawaii, the people, and it's culture.
Cons
So here's where things get a little icky...
1) Our tour guide explained the "Aloha Spirit" to us; fate, loyalty, giving, receiving, etc., which was great until he linked it to his tip. This was basically repeated throughout the tour. It became clear that he expected $30 from each of us. Additionally, he talked about how some times "lower class" people tip less. $30 is not a lot but I don't like being "pressured" to tip and believe that a tip should reflect the service received and NOT the tipper's class. Additionally, the hotel had told us people regularly tip $5-$10, so this raised another red flag.
2) We paid for his snacks. As mentioned, while in Hawaii we took several day tours and not once did we pay for our tour guide's snack. He didn't even ask, he just ate and then we got charged for it.
3) He got in a minor argument with another driver and some words were exchanged. If that was the end of it this would not be a con; however, it was not. At every stop he would talk to the local vendors to discuss what had happened. Honestly, we don't care about the local drama. Just keep it together until the end of the tour and go get a beer with your friends to vent - makes absolutely no sense to drag us into this.
I think the tour guide makes the tour, especially for a day trip like this. Although he provided a lot of great knowledge (which was great) there were a lot of minor cons that impacted the tour. It didn't overshadow the tour but clearly it made an negative impact.
When we returned we talked to our hotel, who called the tour company, who called us within 30 mins to apologize. The lady that called was so apologetic and mortified by our experience - honestly, we still had fun and learned a lot about the Hawaiian culture/history. Most importantly, this didn't take away from the Aloha Spirit we experienced while in Hawaii. There were cons but I would still recommend this tour to my friends, I'd probably recommend a different driver but this company and the tour package was great.
My friend and I wanted to see the sights along the Hana Highway but had heard how difficult the road was. We were very happy we chose to take a van tour of the area as the road became very tight and windy in many sections. We absolutely loved our day tour with Hana Tours of Maui. Our driver Ted was informative and entertaining the whole day. He made us all feel special and he clearly wanted us to get the most out of our experience. I will be recommending this tour company to my friends and family. Thank you to Ted for being such a great tour guide.
We have taken 2 other tours of Hana in past. Used valley isle and mahalo tour companies. Both were nice especially because we didn't have to drive. The road can be challenging and driver misses a lot. This time we chose a new company. It was a very pleasant surprise. Our driver was Ted. The tour could take up to 10 but our group was a diverse group of 6 ranging from 20-70 years. Tour started with full hot breakfast, your choice of food at Cafe O Lea which overlooks golf course. Comfortable and cool trip in van with great views regardless of seat position. Ted held everyone's attention with stories of maui history. Background on celebrities who lived or presently life on Maui. Frequent stops for pictures Surprisingly at places we had not been to on previous tours. Ted made special stop for ginger drink to soothe a passengers nausea No request was over looked. It was like having a private tour without the expense. We heard about history, lore and legends of ancient Hawaiians. We picnicked at Black sand beach state park with tasty lunch of choice of sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks. We had the opportunity to swim there if you chose. It was perfect spot for pictures to add to our collection of waterfalls, valleys and oceans crashing on to lava rocks. After a stop at Charles Lindbergh grave site we drove around the far side of Maui where rental companies tell you not to take their vehicles. Diverse landscapes. Another reason we were happy to be passengers. Final stop was at organic honey location. Ted was a enchanting story teller and perfect guide. Mahalo
We've driven the Road to Hana before on our own and always thought it was breathtaking and beautiful but we never made it the whole way around. This is the first time we have booked a tour to do the Road to Hana and it was so worth it. Not only did we make different stops but our guide knew where to go and how to find places that we just couldn't find on our own, including some of the most incredible swimming holes and waterfalls. We saw Charles Lindbergh's grave. We heard incredible stories along the way. We learned history and culture. And we drover around the back side of Haleakala, which we had never done before. However breathtaking it is from the front side view, it is even more grand and unbelievable from this other angle. It's indescribable. I would definitely recommend this tour. Plus you can enjoy the views more when you're not worried about the Road.
Two days in Maui, drove this Road to Hana. Takes about 2-3 hours as winding curves, no pull offs.
A waste if time my opinion and wife got car sick, no place to pull off.
End of road a black sand beach not worth time to take a dip.
better to see more of Maui which is beautiful.
