After passing through the Garden of the Gods you head down to Polihua beach and a 4 wheel drive is a necessity. The views of the ocean and outlying islands is unreal, and then you end up on a huge beach with some tree's to park under. We parked the car, and were getting ready to take out the cooler when we noticed more than a few wasps. Eventually Wasps were swarming our Jeep and we took off for the other side of the beach, but they followed us. Unfortunately, our plans for spending a few hours at the beach were interrupted by the wasps. I am sure the wasps are probably only a problem at certain times of the year, we were there June 30th. Hopefully, we will get back there in a few years and we can visit this beach again without the Wasps.

Access to this beach is not for the faint of heart. Getting here takes effort and determination, but the reward is well worth it. This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Long, wide, and nearly uninhabited. Spectacular views of the ocean. Absolutely fantastic. It lies at the end of a long, rough.....make that VERY ROUGH... trail, which can only be accessed by 4 wheel drive jeeps. Probably not the best place for swimming, as the surf is pretty rough. But wow...is it ever a beautiful place. This is one of those rare places in the world where you can stand and feel like you are the only person on the planet.

Once we actually got to garden of the gods, the kiddos were all napping in the back seat, so we continued down to Polihua. What a treat. We parked under the shade of the last few trees before the beach and found a HUGE beach with nobody on it. Just brilliant golden sand for as far as we could see. We kicked off our sandals and just walked. Girls picking up shells, us taking some amazing pictures, and everyone enjoying the full sun. Out in the channel between Molokai, we saw our most impressive whale performance yet. It was as if they were dancing for us. Flipping around for the whole time we were on the beach. We followed the tracks of some animals, inspected some driftwood and really just soaked up the experience.

OK the drive down to the beach requires a 4 wheel drive and you will be shaken and covered with red dirt when you arrive but the view is spectacular. We ate lunch on the deserted beach watching a baby whale do repetitive breaches with proud mom close by.

If you rent a jeep in lanai, definitely check out this beach. It is absolutely gorgeous, worth a visit even if you can't swim at it. We took the first ferry to lanai and when we got to the beach we were the only people there, I would definitely recommend heading over there early. The ride there is bumpy, but worth it.
