Just keep driving up Waimea Canyon Drive and you will get the most spectacular vistas, including this one. This island is so gorgeous and wonderful.

Until we arrived here, I thought nothing could top Wiamea Canyon right down the road, but Kalalau Lookout won out, and it wasn't even close. This may be the most amazing site on earth, a wonderful combination of vivid blue skies, rich bluegreen ocean, and green and earth-tones of the mountains. It was a bucket-list destination I never knew was there until I saw it. Now that you know, if you ever go to Kauai, you must, must, MUST go to Kalalau Lookout. Trust me, you'll thank me for the recommendation. :-)

We arrived to the lookout right as a group of clouds rolled into the valley, blocking our view. We decided to hang around and see if the weather would change, and within 15 minutes the dense clouds blew away and we were treated to an awesome view of the valley! It's hard to truly appreciate how high up you are until you see one of the tiny catamarans in the water, or if you're lucky enough to spy a helicopter.

We took our time driving up and stopped for lunch. By the time we reached Kalalau Lookout, the clouds had rolled in and you couldn't see anything. We were literally in the clouds. We hiked a little and hung around for about 45 minutes, then the clouds opened up for a short while. We were able to see the view down in the valley and to the ocean. It was so exciting to get that peak.

The hiking was steep and slippery.
