Owner description: A beach in the northern part of Kauai.

This, in my opinion, is the nicest beach on Kauai. I lump it in with Kee Beach and Haena as you can walk from Kee all the way down past Tunnels - you can walk for miles and miles on these beaches - it is incredible. The day we were there was too rough to swim at Haena, but Tunnels is protected by the reef, so it was very calm. These are some of the most spectacular beaches I've ever seen. The south shore beaches do not even compare in my opinion.

This is a beautiful beach and if the current isn't too strong, the snorkeling is the best in the state. We were lucky enough to snorkel twice there on our visit. It is a walk to get to the reef to snorkel, but well worth it. Crowds were lighter here, too.

This beach is great, it has a beautiful backdrop, clear water, a nice reef for snorkelling. Be sure to arrive early to get parking spot. In the winter months it may be closed for swimming as the waves and currents may be too strong. If you want snorkel you will have to head east of the main area towards the reef.

This would also be nice beach for a walk, but be warned the sand is not packed down, so it may difficult for people with less mobility.

On a nice day there is no better place to be on the Island

I was waiting for high surf to ease over past few days and good conditions finally allowed to open the beach for swimming. This place is much better than any other beach on the island. Less crowded, protected by reef so it's swimmable and great for snorkeling, endless shoreline with sand if you decide to walk both ways from it, views are just the most amazing. So we and both our kids enjoyed half day just playing, swimming and snorkeling all the time. We also did go to Poipu beach which was way overcrowded, and with less fish. Anini beach was nice but felt like a park lake with trees and grass, plus no one but campers that do look like homeless sometimes. Hanalei is big and probably better for surfers, it has pier which some people use so they don't have to paddle; more people there too, not to my liking. There are few nice smaller beaches that we also found in northern part of the island, but tunnel beach is our favorite one!

It was great to visit this beach and see the cave just a few steps away. We were hoping to snorkel, but it was definitely not snorkel weather (think big round tunnel shapes in the water). It was also not good for surfers on the day we went - lifeguards told us it was too dangerous as winds were coming from different directions causing the ocean to join at certain points (or something like that!). It is a lovely beach though, and i'm sure on a calm day it's probably lovely there. If you've never seen huge waves, check it out in Jan because that in itself was a great experience. We got there early (by around 9am) and had no problem using the free parking right by the beach/cave. By the time we left (about 10:30am) it was jam packed and there were at least 7 or 8 cars waiting for a spot. It was also getting very crowded on the beach/in the cave. If you're not one for crowds then go early.
