This south coast getaway is worth the blister producing 2 mile hike or bone jarring ride through the the fields east of Poipu. You'll roll up Poipu Rd to the monstrous Hyatt and have to make a call. Do you park at Shipwreck's and get your miles in, or drive toward the sunrise a hope the gate I open. Do either, do both. Do whatever it takes to get you to Maha! You will not be disappointed. You will not want to leave. This is a wonderful expanse of white, silky beach with wonderful shady spots to duck in and out of as the sun starts to inundate the beach. Driving allows the comfort of bringing chairs and beers. Hiking gives you the satisfaction that you made the frickin' effort and all these yahoos with there coolers should take a hike. It is really peaceful coexistence here and you will enjoy your stay no matter how you get here. Bottom line, screw the rental agreement on the car or get out the hiking flips and get your tail down to Maha. If you drive and surf or boogie board, bring your gear. The break and the company are casual. Just don't pass up this spot...

On th drive to Maha'ulepu you wonder if you are headed to the end of the earth...just past the Grand Hyatt resort, the paved road ends, as does the look of civilization. This is a great place to hike, walk uncorwded beaches, play in the surf, fly a kite, or just marvel at the ocean...with your own piece of beach! No fighting the crowds...just a chance to escape your cell phone reception, email, and everything else you need to get away from! A beautiful slice of Hawaii that retains its natural beauty! Great spot for a picnic!

Have gone to Poipu Beach for years and never ventured past. What a mistake! Drive another 2 miles into a farm road (rough) and you will be rewarded with the most beautiful beach in Kauai. Shaded beach with fine sand and sandy bottom. Secluded but stretches for miles. No amenities so pack a cooler. Worth it!!
