“We used this for teaching our kids to snorkel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

Very safe place to get kids comfortable with snorkeling and paddle boarding. Great afternoon here. Our kids were ready to snorkel tunnels after this. The water is so warm and the kids were rewarded with tons of fish swimming around without fear of the bigger fish.

“Like swimming in a fish bowl!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

This is a really fun and super safe place to swim in the ocean. There are two man-made tide pools made with lava rocks. the pools are constantly refilled by the ocean so there are a ton of fish swimming around. People were snorkeling there too which I'd imagine is a really fun place to snorkel! My husband and I had a really fun time here! :)

Particularly good for kids and those who do not want to swim in Hawaii's rough surf.

“Nice area for swimming without rough surf.”

Great place to bring children with a calm water area for wading and swimming and observing fish swimming around you. Good facilities for a day at the beach.

“Friendly beach with little to no waves, but dirty”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

With the winter storms, the waves can be overwhelming. Lydgate Beach Park was surrounded by large lava rocks to block the waves which makes it great for snorkeling and easy swimming. Unfortunately, the lava rocks also prevent the dirt and beach scrap from being pulled back into the ocean. Otherwise, the grounds (including showers and bathrooms) were nice and open.

“Excellent First Beach Stop for Families With Younger Kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012 via mobile

In the winter months, it can be hard to find beaches with little or no surf for kids. Lydgate with its completely sealed off ocean beach area is the answer. A stone wall keeps the pounding surf at bay. Inside the protected area, there's a gradually slopimg beach with a pool-like area that's excellent for beginner snorkelling. We just had goggles and saw an interesting fish of varied colours and sizes. As of Dec 2012, the water was nearly clear. Washrooms and change areas are dodgy, much like every beach in Kauai. There's a large fun playground nearby, perfect for 8 and under. Lots of parking. Food available at Coconut Marketplace two minutes north.
