It was quite and almost empty when i visited. It is also a special place as it is near the mouth of Waimea river - a sacred river to the locals. Nice and quite walk..

We recently visited Kauai with our 4 year old grandson. He's taken swimming lessons, but isn't proficient at it. This park offers a protected swimming area that is perfect for small children. Our grandson was concerned about going into the ocean, at first, but soon got used to the waves. The beach has a gentle slope so kids can play in the surf safely. The park also offers a giant play structure, so if you need to get out of the sun, this is the place to go. The structure has lots of towers, and slides and lots of room to run. Our grandson loved it, and we were grateful for the shade covered benches, so that we could relax while he played. This is agreat place for small kids.

We visited several beaches on Kauai with our 2-year-old, and this was our favorite. There is a lava rock wall in the ocean that provides a nice swimming area for small children. Our daughter is a beginning swimmer, so we didn't take her very far out, but she loved playing on the beach where the waves gently come and go. There is also a wonderful playground just off the beach, and a very cool bridge/maze/playground at the far south end of the beach. If you travel to Kauai with a toddler, don't miss this beach park!

We took our snorkel gear here on the last day of our visit because it was near our hotel. We enjoyed the snorkeling at Ke'e Beach and Poipu Beach park, but found this to be disappointing. The water was not clear, so drive a bit further to the other places if you have the time. Also, do not leave your belongings unattended. While on shore, putting our fins on, I happened to look towards the tree where we left our gear bag and car keys and saw a woman taking off with my tote bag. I ran uphill in sand to catch her and grab my bag. Because it drew some attention from others, she turned to her accomplice on a moped and pretended to have mistakenly grabbed my bag thinking it was hers. She then hopped on the back and they rode off. I was too stunned and shaken to look at their plate, so I could not provide that useful info to the police. However, when I did report it, the police did not seem concerned and dismissed my report. This must be a usual occurrence on the island or just explains their laid back law enforcement. In any case, we let our guard down at Lydgate since we experienced nothing like this at Ke'e Beach days before. The difference seemed to be how crowded Ke'e was compared to Lydgate.

Just south of the town of Wailua, Lydgate Beach Park is a nice little park. We stopped on a beautiful, blue sky day in May and enjoyed a picnic lunch at one of the many tables. Afterward, we enjoyed walking the beach which was littered by driftwood -- it reminded us of Driftwood Beach on the north shore of Jekyll Island, GA -- don't know if it always has the driftwood, but the driftwood certainly made it unique compared to the other beaches on Kauai. Further up the beach, we found beachside pools created by semi-circles of stacked black rocks -- very picturesque. We found other beaches on Kauai that we liked better, but this was a good stop for our day on the east coast of the island.
