“Fern Waste of Time”
Reviewed November 29, 2013 via mobile

If we didn't get in for a senior discount my wife and I would feel even more badly, the Fern Grotto was a rip off. The Grotto was nothing more than a rock wall of ferns with a small trickle of water falling down. The entertainment provided on the return trip wasn't bad but not enough to pay for, go to a luau instead

“Waste of time”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

The boat ride was down an overgrown river with not much to see. The walk to the grotto was OK with many tropical plants but no name plates to tell us what the were, our guide couldn't wait to get there and play his guitar. The grotto is closed to the public, you get to look at it from about 200 yards. Hear the worst rendition of the "Hawaiian Love Song" then ride back. The dancer on the way back really tried to make the trip worth while but in all it was a bust. It was part of our "Best of Kauai" tour which was another waste of a day on the island.

“Pretty Spot---Would Not Have Seen It If It Was Not On The Tour”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

I enjoyed the Fern Grotto because I am a plant lover. This scenic spot was lovely but so is almost everything I had experienced in Hawaii. The river boat ride to get there was exciting for me as I had not done that before. The short walk to the grotto was enjoyable and at the grotto there were many photo opportunities. A waterfall and a relaxing setting await each traveler. This is a unique attraction and was a very pretty spot.

“This should be dropped from Grayline's tour of Kauai”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

First, let me say that I enjoyed reading all of the one-star reviews of the Fern Grotto more than I enjoyed the tour itself. All in all, it was memorable only because of how lame it was. The boat ride to the grotto had no sights worth seeing. When we arrived at the grotto, we had to sit in the boat for a few minutes and breathe diesel exhaust because they sent two boats up at the same time and the grotto can only handle one boatload at a time. Then, after disembarking and being herded up a trail, we were told we needed to wait for five minutes until the other people had moved on. Well, five minutes became about 20. When we got to the grotto, we stood on a platform and viewed the grotto from a distance. We were told the grotto used to be more lush and people could actually enter the grotto that's big enough to hold 150 people. But Hurricane Anika whipped off all of the ferns and they were only now slowly growing back. So we stood there looking at nothing, trying to imagine what used to be, while listening to some guy since the Hawaiian Wedding Song and telling us to kiss the person we were with when we were done. Yawn. To top it off, there was some bratty little three-year-old boy who screamed through the whole thing. On the trip back to the dock, there was hula dancing and the guests were encouraged to dance with the dancers to learn to hula. After getting hosed by the tour itself, not many people were in the mood to dance. We should have stayed on the dock with our bus driver. I'd have rather heard him talk about growing up in Bakersfield than go on this cheesy trip up to the Fern Grotto.

“Not what you think”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

If you're thinking that you will be seeing a lush jungle like grotto overflowing with ferns and a waterfall, think again. You will be taken on a large flat bottomed boat for a short and uninspiring trip down a river where you will disembark and walk on a path through trees to a platform where you'll see the "fern grotto". The grotto itself is a wet rock wall with a few ferns on it and some dripping water. You'll get a brief history of the site , a song and a hula. On the way back there will be live Hawaiian music and hula dances.
You're time and money could be better spent doing something else unless you just want a diversion.
