If you're thinking that you will be seeing a lush jungle like grotto overflowing with ferns and a waterfall, think again. You will be taken on a large flat bottomed boat for a short and uninspiring trip down a river where you will disembark and walk on a path through trees to a platform where you'll see the "fern grotto". The grotto itself is a wet rock wall with a few ferns on it and some dripping water. You'll get a brief history of the site , a song and a hula. On the way back there will be live Hawaiian music and hula dances.
You're time and money could be better spent doing something else unless you just want a diversion.

I liked the Fern Grotto. It was only $20 per person. It was entertaing. They had a band and hula dancers. The staff was friendly and very humorous. They sang a song in Japanese. It's a nice cool boat ride. You see people canoeing and paddle boarding along the way. One guy was paddle boarding with their dog. At the end of the boat ride once you get to the grotto they have nice stories about the fern grotto. Some people get married there. When you go wear bug spray and sunscreen. It is hot and there are mosquitos. I recommend this tourist attraction. It's an inexpensive way to tour a part of Kauai and learn a little history. It's listed in "This Week, Kauai" which you can pick up at the airport or get from the AAA Hawaii office in Honolulu, Oahu. If you're a AAA member they can mail you a copy and a map and a tour book.

Nothing left to see. The company should not offer this tour anymore. We were under the impression to get closer to the fern grotto, but instead listening to the hula dancing performing the dance and music. After the performance was done, we were rushed back to the boat to get back to the dock. Don't waste your time. I agreed with other reviewers I don't think it was worth $20.

One star is being generous. We felt like we were in a bad movie. Lines of people being herded around like trained seals. Lame commentary on the boat "Look at this tree, look at this mountain" was terrible and was aimed at the lowest possible common denominator. Fern Grotto was disappointing since there is no access to the grotto itself and from what I understand, it was decimated by Aniki. The only redeeming time was when I left our group to grab a few nice closeup photos of the vegetation before the next stampede of visitors arrived. Return trip was equally bad with equally bad commentary. Don't waste your time.

Wow was this awful. We went there 12 years ago and could walk around, up to everything, and now, it's all boarded over, rails, and there's nothing to see, too overgrown (and not with ferns). I wouldn't waste my time.
