Nice visit to Fern Grotto. Good commentary and relaxing boat ride. Nice also to Canoe up the river. Shame you cannot enter the Cave anymore due to Safety reasons

Nice attration. Great forest to look at. A good boat trip to take on a slow day. A place where a lot of weddings take place.

If you have 2 hours to burn and you don't mind paying $20 a person, then I would go. Pretty much you get on a barge, lots of seating, you are entertained with music on the way down the river, you get off the boat and visit the grotto, nice greenery, hear about the history of the grotto, get back on the boat and hear a little more about the river. It was ok, something we hadn't seen before.

Paid $20 per person to take the boat to see the Fern Grotto. Don't believe you can get there any other way, but timed it with our Luau so that worked out at least (same family runs both - Smith family). They do offer a narrative on the boat to the Fern Grotto and music / dancing on the way back so its not a bad deal, but the Fern Grotto itself can only be seen from a wooden platform about 30 yards away. Guess you could get closer to it in 2006 and before but the weather eroded the rocks and state park service changed the rules. Its still beautiful to look at, but you take a picture, listen to the Hawaiian wedding song played, and then you leave.

There are almost no ferns to be seen, much less a grotto. One takes a boat up the Wailua River and then walk to a platform to see some greenery hanging from a rock face. Nothing else. Not worth it.
