“Top notch, kewlest beach ever! No swimming - but amazing beyond words.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

Black sand beaches are cool, Period. This one is large - with waves crashing in, lots of turtles hauled out and swimming around - as well as just an amazing view of the ocean. This was my second favorite place to visit on Hawaii - after VNP. I could have spent a whole day here - amazing huge waves, many turtles ( at one point saw 7 in the water -2 hauled out ) - and although some kids were swimming in a tidal pool - I would not swim here. Fantastic beach.

“Worth seeing on the Big Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

We stopped here while touring around the Big Island in Hawaii and it was worth seeing. The sand really is black, but very course. The beach is easy to find, was not very crowded and it was easy to access and park. We saw sea turtles resting on rocks and swimming around in the water. It's just something different to see. The beach is over an hour drive from Hilo, and a little over a half hour from Volcano National Park, and totally worth the trip.

“Beautiful and Amazing Views of the Powerful Ocean...And Turtles!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

This beach is a must-see! So beautiful with the black sand, big rocks and powerful ocean. The water's color was incredible against the black rocks and sand - a bright turquoise blue. We went later in the afternoon - maybe around 5:30-6pm - and it wasn't crowded at all. Many people were camping there.

We also saw two turtles up on the shore - it was awesome!

“Worth a visit especially to see turtles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

We stopped in to see the black sand beach on our way to Volcano. The beach was interesting with a number of turtles basking on the sand. My kids enjoyed seeing the turtles and the waves crashing on the rocks looked great. The beach is crowded thou with tours groups and people strolling around and taking pictures. To me this beach is worth a visit but not to hang out all day. It is not easy to swim or snorkel because of the currents and a crowded beach full of sunbathers, etc. is one thing but this is more of a tour spot than anything else. My wife and I were here almost 20 years ago and it seemed much nicer, cleaner and less crowded. If you go down to Kalapana area on the other side of Volcano National Park you can actually find some nicer black sand beaches to check out.

“One of the coolest things I have ever seen”

My daughter and I took a day trip to the big island and drove to the black sand beach. Right off the road, not crowded. Definately worth seeing if you are in the area.
