Owner description: Nestled in an area with coconut trees and a black sand beach, this park is one of the best in Hawaii.

I loved this location because of the turtles, there were 4 large turtles on the beach and in the tide pools. The black sand is beautiful too. This is a simple location with portapotties. I saw snorkelers but have no idea how good it is at this site. This is about a 30-45 min drive from the volcano park.

We stopped at Punaluu Black Sand beach as part of an afternoon road trip that included Kilauea. This beach is very picturesque and very cool. They say there are always turtles there, breeding, mating, or just hanging around. We did see a few the day we were there.
We didn’t swim as it was later in the day, a little bit windy, and cooling down.

Our only regret is that we did not stop at the green sand beach on the way.
We were coming from Kona and was going to do the black sand beach and Kilauea. We knew this was going to be a two hour drive each way, and we were already tired. So when we saw the sign for South Point which is the southern most point in the United States (Key West is the southern most in the continental US) we passed it by.

Later we found out that if you have a four wheel drive vehicle, are willing to pay a local $20 a person, or hike three miles one-way, you could see the green sand beach. I googled it afterwards and it looks very cool. One of the concession owners at Punaluu had some samples of the green sand, and it is very green, similar in color to peridot.

Popped in here for about an hour to check out the black sand beach and see if we could find a sea turtle. We did. Didn't seem like the greatest place for swimming, too rocky, but worth the visit. Make sure to check out the Punaluu Bake Shop down the road.

This beach is a little bit hard to get to, but well worth the effort. You go until there is no more road, then get out of your car and hike to the bottom. It is not a difficult hike, and great views along the way. Just hang out and watch surfer boy and maybe see a whale offshore. And you might want to take some water for the hike back up.

Well worth the drive to this amazing beach. The sand is pure , soft and black. It's great to find a beach that is quiet and untouched. There is a small shop there that sells souvenirs and drinks and snacks
