Drive along the full chain of crater roads for a lovely drive and beautiful interesting views of old lava flows, rocks and large craters. The best view comes at the end by the sea well worth the 20 mile drive. One of the most beautiful and interesting drives on the isle. You must pay 10$ to enter the park.

Driving down the Chain of Craters Road gives you a first hand view of what Kilauea has accomplished in making the island of Hawai'i the Big Island. It's a chilling proof of nature's power reminding you to respect it. There are markers on the road that points to the dates when the lava flow has reached that particular spot. At the end of the road is the lava flow that has extended to the ocean. The hike to the end of the trail is short but fun and exciting. Dress appropriately, stay on the course, and remember to bring water.

This is a beautiful winding road that leads down to a lava flow that covered the road. There are beautiful scenic viewpoints to see the various lava flow fields that have been created over the years. Once you get to the bottom, you park about half a mile from the actual lava flow over the road. It's amazing to see how thick the lava was in some areas. Many people use this a starting point to hike to the current lava flow, as you cannot see the current flow from any of the vantage points. The day we went there was a tropical storm approaching and they were closing Chain of Craters Road and all hiking trails near the lava flow early. Nonetheless it was a really worthwhile drive and amazing to see the old lava flows.

Seeing this is believing. Worth the trip, it's not that long a drive and there are lots of pull over places to take pics. Just amazing when you are standing there staring at these craters and lava fields and realizing they are not as old as you are!! Do it! (Note you have to enter Volcanoes national Park to get on Chain of Craters Road which means you have to pay the park entry fee - $10 for non-residents, free for residents. Park entry is good for a week though!)

Stunning drive! Some amazing views. Go see the sea arch at the end of the road. The black lava makes the sea look even deeper blue
