We arrived at 2PM and got a pass. The early crowd must have left after lunch! Once you arrive at the parking lot, there is a little 3-min walk to do. Restrooms are along the way. Showers available as well at the same place. Bring your snorkling equipment - swim close to the left hand side rocks when you arrive. Beautiful corals and fish. Careful not to hurt coral with the fins! We even saw a turtle!

Water is calm, no rocks in the water. Bring water and snacks. We stayed 2 hours, could've stayed longer but left around 4PM as it was getting cloudy.

This is a somewhat private beach..enter at the gate..cant stress enough get there early forty spots to park. Facilities, shade and since it is a hotel beach and technically a private spot uncrowded for the big island! Get there by 8 30 am!

We had a very nice time at the Mauna Kea Beach. We came in at 8:45 and received the 32nd of 40 possible public parking spaces.

The surf was nice, water was delightful and you can see to the bottom. There was some snorkeling over near a reef at the far end of the beach.

Besides the beach, the hotel was very accommodating in selling provisions.

We are a bit spoiled on beaches since we went to St. John USVI this winter but Mauna Kea is still a very nice beach. The day we went there was a high surf advisory but Mauna Kea seemed to be protected as the waves were practically non-existent.

We must have gotten lucky, we arrived late but still got one of the 40 beach parking spots. The beach itself wasn't too crowded but we wanted to boogie board so we left after an hour.

This is the classic white sandy beach. Not going to say it is the "best" beach on the big island because each offers something unique. But, this is a beautiful beach that is worthy of it's world class status. More geared to relaxation than activity.

Very limited public access means less crowds. However, you need to arrive early. We arrived at 8:45AM and was #22 of 30. Hotel has a very organized structure in place to limit access to the public to only 30 parking stalls. Once these are gone, you are pretty much out of luck. Shear luck to arrive in afternoon to coincide with the departure of one of the 30 public guests.
