Savannah Rapids is on the Savannah River. It is beautiful. There are walking/biking trails between the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal. This is a popular area for joggers and bikers. The trail goes all the way to downtown Augusta. This is a popular spot for engagement/child/family pictures. There is a nice pavilion available for rent that hosts weddings, graduation parties, etc. People also fish here. Restroom facilities are available.

This is a very nice area for hiking and bike riding. The old canal adds a nostalgic charm to the area (in my opinion). The welcome center itself has some old artifacts for exhibition of Georgia's history.

As a bike riding person, the greater Augusta area is not a "bike friendly" place and has very few places to ride in relative safety. However, the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center is a great place to jump on the Augusta Canal. While fairly heavily used, I've always found the people to be friendly and always felt safe there. There are places where, I imagine, the view hasn't changed at all since the mid-1800's and there's a good bit of wildlife if you take the time to see it. Mostly shaded, it is a great place to cycle or walk. However, like everything else associated with Augusta, the closer you get to the city, the less safe, maintained, and cared for the trail becomes. Once you reach Lake Olmstead (about 5 miles), the trail becomes a one-lane trek through tall grass and then disappears altogether by the textile mills. I would not recommend anyone going past the Lake Olmstead bridge.

This is the trailhead for the River Watch trail. It ought to be the first thing you see when you get here. It is just a beautiful trail, with the Savannah river on one side, and the Augusta Canal on the other. There's nothing like it.
