“A tradition spot for walking and seeing native animals”
Review of Bear Hollow Zoo

Bear Hollow Zoo

If you can not spot those owls or bears in the wild then a walk at Bear Hollow will fill the bill. We brought our first daughter to the zoo in 1975 and will be taking visiting grandchildren there, too. Is well run for a small zoo and does have many kids' programs throughout the year.

a great little zoo in our little town that does great things for wildlife. it's not fancy but it could be if we supported it more! my daughter loves going here and it's right next to the park for picnics and playground time.

This is a wonderful hidden gem in Athens. The zoo is completely free and a great place for a walk with some great animals to watch. They have beavers, alligators, deer, turkey, owls, hawks, and of course bears. They also have a reptile and fish house that is open at certain times. The exhibits are nicely laid out and its very interesting to watch all the different animals interact. This is a great place to bring kids as all the viewing areas are designed for both tall and short guests. There is also a great pond with walking trails adjacent to the park. In addition there are some short trails through the woods. This is my favorite place to come in Athens as the park and trails are nicely maintained making it a great stop at all times of the year. During December the park will run "Deck the Hollow" where they will open the park at night having decorated the park with lights. This is a great event that we go to every year, it has a minor entrance fee ($3 for adults).

Bear hollow offers a free way for kids to visit their favorite rescued animals right in the middle of Athens. There are bears, bobcats, alligators, turtles, snakes, frogs, fish, opossums, deer, turkeys, owls, birds of prey. Informational plaques are available, and so are park staff, often, to answer questions about the animals and their habitats. There is also an indoor exhibit that features bugs, snakes, and small fish. Easy to follow, stroller friendly sidewalk path. Mostly shaded, which is good in the summertime. My kids love to go there several times a year. Bring your own snacks and drinks.
