Real InterContinental Tegucigalpa at Multiplaza Mall
Ranked #5 of 30 Hotels in Tegucigalpa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 8, 2008

We found this to be a great hotel. The Intercontinental is a relatively short drive from the airport and does offer shuttle service - in my opinion, it is MUCH better to observe the Tegucigalpa traffic, then to drive in it. The hotel restaurant and bar were both very good. Perhaps most importantly, the Intercontinental staff are incredible. They were extremely helpful with dinner reservations, tours and other transportation arrangements. Every employee we encountered spoke good English (if needed) and many would even greet us by name. Frankly, I would match their customer service against any 5 star hotel in the US. The hotel is located right across from a very modern shopping mall, complete with movie theaters. We walked over to the mall several times during our stay and had no problems whatsoever with safety or anything else. You do have to walk across a couple of lanes of busy traffic, but it wasn't a big deal in our experience. If I had to offer one minor critique, the bathroom was a bit small for this caliber of hotel. But, I am really stretching for something critical here. Overall, a very favorable experience at a modern hotel with extremely professional and pleasant staff.

My husband and I came to Honduras for work and we had to stay in this hotel for a month while waiting for our permanent place to be ready. My only complaint would be is I speak a couple of languages, but Spanish is not one of them, so not always I had luck getting from the staff what I needed and ordering food at the restaurant was challenging sometimes. The reception people do speak English, apart from them, you will have 50/50 luck getting what you need if you don't speak Spanish. Other than that, I do agree that this is very nice hotel, yes I would stay here again, and yes I would recommend it.

Great hotel in the centre of town. The rooms are reasonably sized and really clean and comfortable. Bathrooms in the room are quite small but really very clean and nice. The restaurant in the hotel is great and they have a nice small pool. The staff are all super helpful and friendly too. All in all a great place to stay for a few days.

I stayed here for four nights while doing with work with the Honduran Govt. For those of you who don't know Teguz, it is a rough city in which to navigate, work, and exist. The roads are bad, short, twisty, and hilly and traffic is a nightmare. That said, the city has a few "nice areas", but nothing that is really pedestrian friendly, so this hotel is a great oasis for people working in Teguz.

First, location. The hotel is strategically placed in front of a large mall, for better or worse, close to a food court with a mix of fast food from the US and Honduras. It quite easy to buy phone cards for cellphones, groceries at the store (coffee and water), clothing if you need it, gifts, etc. For those who want US food, TGIFridays and Tony Roma are across the street. Behind Roma's is Las Cebollinas, a mexican restaurant on par with Chilis, good, but not great.

Second, the hotel. The staff is outstanding, friendly, willing to help, no attitude, and overall very competent and gracious. The lobby is a beautiful, peaceful mix of Central America meets Moorish architecture. The lobby bar is nice and the music on Friday nights is great. The pool area is relaxing, but the pool is quite warm, so it's not really "refreshing" after a day in a hot truck driving around the city.

The restaurant and staff are outstanding. The food choices are a mix of Honduran and European, with a theme buffet each night. I ate there three nights in a row before I needed a change. When ordering steaks, I almost had to wrestle the waiter to not have it prepared "bien cozido". The Hondurans seem to like their steak done to the point of burned and it was a back and forth for a minute to negotiate my steak to be 3/4 well done. Still, it was nicely prepared. My main reason for eating in rather than going to a restaurant was that after a day of navigating the traffic, the last thing I wanted to do in the evening was head back out into the traffic just to have dinner.

The room was very nice and I was a bit scared at first when I saw that I was facing the mall and two major streets filled with cars, but whoever did their windows deserves an award. I couldn't hear a sound, not even a murmur of traffic noise, seriously, it was completely soundproofed. The bed was very comfortable and the workspace reasonable with room for a chair and table to drink coffee or read. The pillows were a bit below par and stiff. The bathroom was reasonable.

They only provided me with a breakfast service card for the first night, then I never saw one again. So, the second morning I called room service for a pot of coffee and they brought it up in five minutes, no charge. This continued until I left, so who knows, but it was nice to have free coffee brought each morning.

The gym is just fine with three treadmills, one t.v., a bad nautilus set (pullups and quads only), and free weights.

Summary: I would definitely stay here again if I had to return to Teguz. I talked to others who had stayed at the Marriott and Honduras Maya and they had their own reasons for staying there (better gym, food, etc), but I can't think of any reason to not stay here again, it was so nice in so many ways and it really was an oasis in the middle of a difficult city.

My husband, two teens and I stayed at the InterContinental for a total of 3 nights and absolutely loved it. After a 6 and a half hour plane ride, our taxi brought us to the hotel and as we walked into the lobby, all I could think of was how glad I was to have booked this hotel. It was beautiful--a lot of nice, comfortable chairs and sofas to sit on in the lobby while my husband checked us in--beautiful artwork and a nice cafe off the lobby that we ended up eating breakfast in one morning of our stay that was excellent.

Our room was on the 7th floor and had a nice view of the pool--our two teens enjoyed that during our stay. The room had two double beds and were extremely comfortable with lots of pillows and bedding. We had a flat screen t.v., a robe in our bathroom and plenty of nice little amenities on the bathroom sink. The shower had a nice large showerhead and the tub was deeper than traditional tubs in a hotel I've seen--i never took a bath, but it would have been great to soak in.

I can't say enough about the staff--they were always attentive and always greeted us or smiled...we felt very welcomed. If we needed anything, they took care of it promptly. Two different nights we ordered room service and it was presented nicely and the food was great.

The hotel is just mere feet from the Multiplaza Mall--an upscale mall with a food court and a variety of stores. There are some fast food places within walking distance, also--pizza hut, Wendy's, etc.

There was a little gift shop that my kids enjoyed buying a few souvenirs from before we left--probably a little more expensive than if you'd bought them at a local market, but because we were pressed for time at the end of our trip, it was nice to be able to pick up a few items to take home with us.

Originally, we thought about staying at the Marriott--a lady we met in the elevator said that we had made the right choice: the Intercontinental is a much nicer hotel with more to offer. I would stay here again if in Tegucigalpa in the future--and would definitely look for the Intercontinental Hotel in booking a future visit in any other city. I was that impressed with the level of service and quality of the hotel.

I must always start any review but stating that I am a well traveled and certified hotel snob. In a city like Tegucigalpa which is full of nice hotels with the worst hotel staffs in the world (i'm not kidding WORST IN THE WORLD), the Intercontinental gives a glimmer of hope. Their price is a little bit higher than the other hotels, but it is sooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it. First, the service is impecable. People here treat you with respect, and respond to odd requests as if they were nothing. Service is definitely first rate. Food!!! I think everything they have here, except for the local dishes are imported from Spain. The food is absolutely terrific!!! And the chef actually took a special request from me. I think they have the only kitchen in Honduras that uses black pepper. (if you know a lot about Honduran cuisine, you'll understand this) They also have a very decent wine list and reasonable prices. The rooms are like any Westin, Sheraton, Marriott in the U.S. They are extremely clean. I don't know how because I've never seen a housekeeper during all of my stays. The executive floor has very cool marble bathrooms. But the standard baths are nice as well. The place is located directly in front of the nicest shopping mall in Honduras. They also have TGI Friday's and Ruby Tuesday's nearby. LOL!!! Believe it or not they are a big hit in Tegucigalpa and one of the "in places" to go. The pool is also spectacular and they often have special dinners outside near it. Overall, this is the BEST hotel in Honduras. In fact, after experiencing this brand of hotel, it is my favorite for price vs. quality. If you hate the big chain hotels, my ONLY other recommendation in Tegucigalpa is the Hotel Portal del Angel. Wonderful, and I do repeat wonderful staff, but a few cleanliness problems.
Stay at any other hotel in Tegucigalpa if you want to truly experience what is the worst service in the world.
