“Probably the best neighbor I've ever had”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

I lived down the road from Karen for the past year. Her property is beautiful, peaceful, stylish and unique. My mom and my brother each stayed at Casa Cangrejal while visiting me and were amazed to find such an elegant mix of comfort, fun and natural beauty nestled away at a B&B in the jungle. She's a fantastic cook and baker, a riot at a party, and a great source of wisdom regarding just about everything. Ladies, ask for her self-defense lesson and you'll never need to fear a man again. Karen is the single most honest person I've ever met in my life. If you enjoy agreeable, vacuous conversation then she's not the person you wanna have a beer with. Karen is fierce but her heart is as big and as pure as the Cangrejal River. She was something like a drinking buddy/mother to me while I was living on the mountain. Alex rocks too. Check out Casa Cangrejal and you'll walk away with an experience to remember.

We saw Casa Cangrejal in the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die book, described as "a jewel" -so off we went for a four day getaway from it all. Karen arranged for a taxi to meet us and was at the door with a massive welcome.
We knew beforehand that we could go hiking, zip lining, rafting and much more but had simply planned to use our visit to recharge our batteries which we more than achieved.
Alex invited us to join him walking their friendly and very well behaved dogs. He let us set the pace, patiently pointing out birds and trees, showed us the best photo opportunities - the views of the mountains were spectacular.
Breakfast is a veritable feast, so fresh and tasty. A couple of minutes walk away is Omega and just down the road is Richard's, both serve delicious food.
Our room was spacious and very comfortable, fantastic shower and a really homely feel. There is super fast internet so I caught up with a few blogs.
The grounds are beautifully kept and the many flowers and trees are visited by birds including the blue-crowned motmot, oropendola and loads of hummers and butterflies.
This is the place to be if you want to swing in a hammock, take a dip in cool water natural spa or use the casa as a base for a variety of outdoor activities, with a day rounded off at the well stocked bar.
Karen and Alex are first class hosts, we cannot thank them enough.

Spent four fabulous days here and had some incredible adventures. We left Karen and Alex three days ago, Finally getting around to thanking them. First piece of knowledge to share is that Casa Cangrejal and Omega Tours share the same grounds. It is a one minute walk from Karen's to Omega (where you can book all your trips and activities in the area). The rooms and grounds of Casa Cangrjal are impeccable and Karen makes sure that everything you need is or will be taken care of. The food was excellent, the surrounding trails were well marked, the staff was very helpful, and there is no better spot to unwind after a day in the "jungle." Can't say enough good things. A highlight of our many trips abroad. P.S. Do not, not, challenge Karen to a game of pool. P. P.S. Ask for Anthony as your whitewater river raft guide and make sure you get a massage from Kerry

We've been at Casa Cangrejal for the past 3 days. It's a really interesting getaway. The grounds are beautiful, the food has been great, and there are great activities all around. We did the rafting and zip line with our kids (ages 12 & 14). The scenery and forest around Pico Bonito is incredible. This isn't club Med...Honduras isn't as developed as many other places. But if you're looking for something nice that's off the beaten track a bit, you will enjoy it here.

This bed and breakfast is kind of like glamourous camping! Casa Cangrejal combines luxurious rooms and service with the soothing splendor of being in a tropical rainforest. I stayed for an extended period of time for work and play and could not have received better personal attention from the friendly owners (Karen and Alex) and their obliging staff. The rooms are spectacular stonework with high ceilings, homey atmosphere and soft inviting beds. You can go for a swim in the all-natural rain fed pool, lounge on the cozy wraparound sofa on the porch with a good book, hike the trails or ask Karen to setup a more extreme eco-adventure like whitewater rafting, horseback riding and mountain biking! The adventure companies work closely with Karen so its easy to setup and tailored to your schedule. Bar is adjacent to the patio with pool and darts for evening excitement and socializing. Off site lunch and dinner choices are readily available and transportation provided. But don't stray too far because a review of Casa Cangrejal would not be complete without mentioning Karen's expertise in the kitchen! She is a phenomenal cook, with particular concentration in the dessert department! Don't leave without tasting her signature coconut cream pie or chocolate cheesecake, you won't forget it! All in all no better bang for your buck!

Unique, lush, quirky, intimate, and fun aptly describe Casa Cangrejal. We enjoyed our stay in August 2011 and would definitely recommend this to other adventure travelers. I don't think that this is the right destination for everyone, but then again if you're researching staying in the middle of the jungle in Honduras you aren't everyone! The amenities are cozy and feel like home. I loved the outdoor living area with the sweet bar tenders. Karen does a nice job of making you feel welcome, but not smothering you. She's also a very memorable character who really brings this stay to life!

Only downside: it's a very damp locale and I couldn't get pass a slightly musty smelling mattress and pillow. It's a small downside to an otherwise ideal stay!

Casa Congrehal is very nicely constructed using interesting stone and concrete. Karen does a great job of making you feel at home. This was our second visit. Our room was spotless. The breakfasts were tasty. The shower was hot. There were a couple of off site lunch and dinner choices. There were multiple other activies we could have done but we were so comfortable we just spent our time in the lodge reading, selecting from a huge inventory of CD's playing pool and just hanging out.
