we stayed here in February 2010 and had a wonderful few days. Great food and drinks. Had an excellent massage in the room. Beautiful setting for walks and fantastic birding. Would love to return

My wife and I have gotten into eco-vacationing over the past 2 years. We live in San Diego, CA. Our love of snorkelling began on a random trip to Cayman Islands in 2004. We have hiked and snorkelled Hawaii, Cayman, Cancun, Cozumel, Florida Keys, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and a few other places. We first tried Costa Rica on a well-designed 10 day eco-excursion last year. We were hooked on Central America. I am a physician but my first love at an early age was reptiles. We do not like crowds and prefer going out with guides as a couple or in very small group. We also love good food. The Lodge at Pico Bonito provided exactly what we love. Immersion, solitude, and a gourmet dinner with drinks to cap off the day. We had planned outings on hikes and snorkelling that were awesome and never pressured by time. The untouched reef and rainforest of Honduras is amazing. The tour guides are very friendly and impressive with their knowledge of local species. The lodge manager is enthusiastic and informative, and a true inspiration to anyone who loves to explore.

The setting is awe inspiring, great for the early risers that like watching and hearing the day begin. Great for bird watching, tours are expensive. I felt that the prices were a little too high in comparison to the places I stay in when visiting Copan, Roatan, and Utila. The service is very good instead of excellent because of the poor attitude from management.

We booked our trip through SLH.com and in the description and on our confirmation it stated that the "meal plan" was included. However, when we arrived the front desk refused to honor our meal plan booking and said that only breakfast was included. We would have to pay an extra $45 per person per day for the meal plan. We were shocked and asked to speak with the general manager who was nice to us, but acted like this was some kind of typo although it clearly stated that the "meal plan" was included on our confirmation. After arguing back and forth she said she would contact SLH to resolve it. Long story short all we got was a $25 reduction to our $250/night room rate.

The other thing that shocked me about this place were the horrendous taxes and service fees that they assess on practically everything. We took a day trip to Cayos Cochinos, which was $130 per person not including tax and service fees. They added over $40 each for taxes and service fees! If this wasn't enough when we got back from the trip, our guide basically told us we had to tip our boat crew $10 to $20 each! Now last time I checked the 10% service fee was designed to cover the tips for the guide and crew. Unreal.

Besides getting way overcharged for everything, the accommodations were nice, but not amazing like people have stated. The room was clean and comfortable, but to pool was not well kept and had a lot of dead bugs and debris floating in it. In addition, the pool bar was not in operation while we were there. The staff in the restaurant were friendly and helpful, and were just about the only thing that made our $250/night rate even remotely palatable.

The lodge is an absolutely gorgeous facility. Our room was incredibly beautiful as were the lodge buildings and decks for reading, birding, and relaxing. We enjoyed hiking around the grounds and seeing the beautiful wildlife there as well as swimming in the cool rivers around the property. However, as more active hikers and serious nature dorks, we felt limited since the property has only one public hiking trail (about a three mile loop). Beyond that you have to pay for any hiking or other activities you want to do. Furthermore, there isn't a lot of information provided about the plants/animals you see on the trail (unless you want to pay extra for it). One night would have been enough for us at the lodge just based on the quantity of outdoor activities for us to do independently. However, if you are willing to pay for each outdoor experience you want to have, you will likely not be disappointed.

Beautiful location, great service, knowledgable guides & simple, but lovely cabins. We were a bit anxious to take this trip as it was our first to Honduras, we don't speak Spanish & we were traveling with children aged 7 & 9 years. We don't like to fly either, so opted for the 2 1/2 hour van ride from San Pedro Sula's airport. Did reconfirm by phone that we would be met there after emailing our flight info to the manager. A hotel representative was waiting for us just past customs & the van was stocked with a cooler of bottled waters.

James, the hotel manager we met, was very personable. Our guides, Jose - for birding & the Wildlife Refuge tour, & Joel - the hotel guide who came with us for the snorkeling - were great. All of the wait staff were very good as was the food - especially the soups, fish & the choc/coffee marinated steak medallions.

The little sitting area off from the bar area in the restaurant was wonderful for us as our children always finished their meal before we did & were very happy to catch a little TV time (children's movies seemed to be on hand). My husband & I could then finish our own meal in a leisurely fashion & everyone was happy. We could not hear the television from our various tables in the dining room when we were visiting.

As for the cost of the hotel - it was similar to the prices we paid in Costa Rica for upscale hotels & eco resorts. And yes, day excursions could be planned independently for less than offered thru the Lodge (I believe this is always the case wherever one goes). We opted to pay the extra $ for the convenience. Our favorite excursions were the whitewater rafting thru Omega Tours & the snorkeling thru LaCeiba Tours. Both groups were very professional & very safety conscious. Our kids had a fabulous time. They also enjoyed swimming in the river near the Lodge. There were several "pools" where this was possible when we visited, but the river was low during our trip. The water was crystal clear & COLD. Bring masks & snorkels if you have them as you can see fish. River sandals or water shoes are also a good idea as its painful to walk on the riverbed rocks - unless you're used to going barefoot. Check with the desk for specific sites to swim. If the water is too high & fast, a river swim may not be possible.

Overall, a great trip for us. Would love to go back.

My wife and I just got back to the states from our stay in Honduras.
The Lodge at Pico Bonito is where we stayed the last night in Honduras, and it left us with a bad impression of this beautiful country.
Having stayed all over the world at beautiful hotels, I was really looking forward to our stay, unfortunately, The Lodge, didn’t live up to our expectations.
The location of the hotel is beautiful. You are litterly nestled in the middle of Pico Bonito National Park.
You have wild life all around, and just walking the grounds you can see various birds, butterfly’s and bugs you have never seen before in you life.
The food was very good, and the wait staff was top notch.
Why I am giving the hotel such low marks, was the price per night.
We paid $240/USD night, and we were expecting luxury we experienced in Roatan for half the price.....we were mistaken.
The room didn’t have AC, and was very dated.
The beds were comfortable, but for the price we paid, they were nothing special.

If you do come to La Ceiba, don’t stay here. I would recommend that you stay at one of the small hotels scattered throughout the city (ALL CAN BE FOUND ON TRIP ADVISOR), and just take a day trip to Pico Bonito.

We will be back to Honduras, but never to The Lodge at Pico Bonito.
