“Great with a guide!”

Make sure you get a guide to take you through the area and give you the inside scoop. It's much more meaningful. Lots of photo opportunities and a very interesting place to visit. We made a 6-hour drive to Copan and this site was worth it for those interested in history and Mayan culture.

“Definitely worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

The town is beautiful, the setting is tranquil, it's safe to walk around, the food is good, ruins are world class, and the price is reasonable.

Sadly, all of the above are way too rare in Honduras. A visit to this colonial town is definitely worthwhile. Everyone in our group (which had spent quite sometime working in the Honduran cities) described the feeling of relaxation we got in this gem of a town. The recent drop in tourism is quite sad, but the unintended benefit is that it's even more calm of a place to visit.

The ruins are of course the feature, but you've also got boutique arts, hotels, and restaurants at incredible prices. Nearby are many fun activities like hot springs, horseback riding, and charming little haciendas with great views.

“Great ruins!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

Copan is a very impressive site. It might not have the size of places like Tikal, but it's among the best preserved, best restored, and most intricate fo the Mayan ruins. The grounds are very well-cared for and not nearly as touristy or crowded so you really have the place to yourself. Admission is inexpensive, as are the guides which really enhance the experience. I particularly recommend Tony, who was excellent and a character in the truest sense.

I've been seven times now, but my visit this month was my first time there in many years. Since that time, many more areas have been masterfully excavated and the already excavated sites have been even better preserved. Sadly, the number of tourists have significantly dropped in light of Honduras' security issues, but that's all the more reason to visit since a) Copan itself is VERY safe and b) there are few crowds to deal with.

“Absolutely amazing, but get an official guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

The Copán ruins make any trip to Honduras worthwhile. They are near the border, easily walkable in a day and accessible from the quaint town just a km away.
We really enjoyed our visit, but we were persuaded by a guide to use him for our trip and he was useless. He said he was official, but he wasn't wearing the same uniform as the others (we noticed) and then the things he told us were sprinkled with truth but often purely conjecture, his imagination told as truth, or downright wrong. He told us that the hieroglyphic stairway was completed deciphered and had been for years, for example.
I definitely recommend hiring an official guide. It was still amazing as we enjoyed the ruins and learned more from our guide book after our 'tour' finished.

“Amazing”

The ruins are a short walk from town. Get there early in the morning and you will be greeted by flocks of Scarlett Macaws and other wildlife. The early morning is best to get nic photographs of the monuments (estelas) and temples. I didnt go with a guide but I think going with one might be worth it if you are into the historical socio-cultural aspect of the ruins.
