Owner description: Copan Ruinas valley of Kings, Sacred Valley of the Red Scarlet Macaw. Copan Ruinas is an ancient city in the mayan Empire. Located in western honduras at just under 10 minutes from the border with Guatemala el Florido. More than 138,000 visitors came here in 2017, the lowest in years but with a slight increase in traffic in comaprison to 2015. | Many agree the bad condition of the road play an important role to this lack of traffic. Hopefully in 2018 will be better.

Having visited several Mayan archaeological sites, including Tikal, Copan was absolutely worth the trek into Honduras.

Where Copan lacks in tall pyramid structures like its neighbor, Tikal, it easily makes up for with the intricate carvings, statues, stelae and beautiful geographical position in the valley.

Spend 4 hours here - hire a guide to show you the site, and be sure not to rush right into the main plaza - it's more fun to see it 'build up' as the guides will do.

There were no crowds and no hawkers selling stuff. the site was open and self guided which makes it a timely place to visit. The museum was a good conclusion to the site and should not be missed.

you must see this! the best mayan artwork you will ever see. mindblowing! a guide along the main grounds in very helpful, but make sure they are part of the organized/authorized tour guides otherwise you'll pay a lot of money for a not very good tour!

Really enjoyed visiting Copan the town (peaceful, safe, nice resturants and bars), and Copan Ruins were the highlight of Honduras.
It is a large site, with a wealth of monoliths and hieroglyphics. Many of the originals are in the onsite museum to preserve them, but replicas in situ mean that this does not detract from the site.
Pyramids, games court, residential areas, with lawns between and forrest surrounding (with scarlet macaws), so plenty of shade too.
The entrance fee is expensive by Honduran prices, but totally worth it. We also paid for a guide (Tony), who spoke 5 languages and had an encylopaedic knowledge of Mayan history and the ruins.
It is a large site, and we felt like we had it to ourselves; everyone travelling in central america should visit!

This place is beautiful! I would suggest getting a guide for an hour then wandering and discovering for yourself. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. The border crossing from Guatemala was an experience, and a Spanish speaker would have been very helpful. These ruins are amazing and a must see!!
