“Good for a few hours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

I loved seeing the birds, seeing their efforts to reintroduce Macaws to the Copan valley, and the relaxing environment. Beautiful gardens, always the sound of water running nearby, and coffee trees abound. The birds are all rescues and the place is a good cause. Admission is a little steep but a good way to spend 4 hours. Short tuk tuk ride from town. Coffee and sitting on the deck watching birds below was relaxing.

If you are in Copan DO NOT MISS THIS OUT - it's a gorgeous place - beautifully tended - lovely birds - lovingly cared for - and such a good cause to boot. No excuses to ommit from your itinerary.

“Tranquility!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2013

Beautifully lanscaped, tranquil setting for beautiful birds. Guides are well-informed and friendly. Get a photo with a parrot or macaw on your arm! Nice gift shop and refreshments as well. Does not have a touristy atmosphere!

“Great way to spend a morning”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

The Bird Park is really a must see if you go to Copan Ruinas. After the Mayan ruins, it was my favorite part. The park is located in a sort of jungle area about a 5 minute drive up the mountain over Copan Ruinas. The whole part looks like a rainforest with paths thoroughout and large caged areas for the birds. I think a guide is about $10 and worth it. There is an area with around 15 or 20 large, beautiiful macaws sitting out and you can let them stand on your arm or head. Due to all the trees, the park is much cooler than the town and makes for a perfect outing on a hot day. I would suggest bringing a picnic lunch as there are many places to stop and rest and eat. There are also many coffee trees in the part and at the exit is a small cafe where they roast and grind the coffee so you can have a cup. There's also a nice gift shop at the entrance. Its about a 15 minute walk there or a 5 minute ride in a taxi. Overall, a great experience!

“Nice pleasant afternoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

If you are coming from Antigua, you usually arrive between noon and 1 p.m. This gives you a whole afternoon to relax, or do something (you would be cutting yourself short on Copan if you tried to do it that afternoon).

We chose to go to the Macaw Mountain Bird Park. It is 40 lempiras by tuk tuk from parque central.

The admission is $10 and for that you get the opportunity to see a number of indigenous birds in large cages (for lack of a better word) through some of which you can walk. The macaws and toucans were the stars of the park, not to mention the parrots. Walking through the large macaw enclosure was great as we saw macaws play, groom themselves (something they do all the time), eat etc...

The trail took nearly an hour, and then we experienced the macaws close up at the interaction centre. This was a bit of a disappointment in that we were not festooned with birds as shown on the promotional photos, and the staff person there had to be rustled up from elsewhere and seemed to be a bit rushed.

the setting of the park is beautiful, and the river that passes through the reserve was being used by locals for washing and bathing, just outside the park's boundaries, when we were there.
